Anybody who was an adult before the 1980s remembers:
- The "hispanic" category did not exist. There was no such thing. People were white or black.
- Nearly all people of Spanish or Latin American origin were considered white.
- All Mexicans, whether light or brown-skinned, were regarded plainly as "white".
- Mexicans used to say that they were white socially everyday, and would fight you if you implied otherwise.
- They transitioned into minorities some time around the late 1970s. This is after the Chicano movement when they reinvented themselves as "people of color".
It's actually crazy that the younger generation doesn't believe this today. It wasn't that long ago. Anybody is old enough to remember.
