The anime added a bunch of unnecessary, shitty fluff but it's still worth it for a few key awesome scenes (the end of episode 9 is executed even better in the anime than in the manga, for example).
However as a whole the manga is far better, and it's absolutely worth reading.

Nice buzzwords there.
Zombies stories are all essentially the same, but that's not the fun part. The enjoyment comes from the specific characters and their reactions to their environment. Zombies will always be zombies but if you can have the cast themselves be interesting among them, than the story is worth it.
There has been plenty of zombie fiction but I have yet to see a series other than this that follows a bunch of immature high school girls as they try to cope with a zombie outbreak, not to mention Yuki's mental issues on top of that.
Oh, and as a bonus the soundtrack is 10/10. The horror tracks are absolutely top notch.

Great audio is key to creeping the fuck out your audience. Despite knowing Yuki wasn't going to go full autist and beat the shit out of Miki in a psychotic, psychosis-blinded frenzy with a radio, it really seemed like she was going to.
The show's full of great scenes, but it really should've stuck more closely to the manga, rather than depend on cheap pet shenanigans to get an emotion out of the viewer during the finale.
The show would've definitely benefited if it were 2cour to really flesh out the characters and make the end of their high school career that much more impactful and didn't have the fucking dog.
