3) Migration used to be more difficult. It used to be that you would have to spend your whole life savings to get on a cramped boat for months just to get here. No nice planes to cross the ocean.
4) By the time these migrants got off of the boats they often had nothing and there was no welfare to exploit. They needed to work. They adapted a hard work culture out of necessity and from that they saw prosperity.
5) Cities attract extremes. If you look at the median quality of life, these places are not that prosperous. Most people just see the good areas or the millionaires of these cities and ignore the ghettos or tent cities.
