For those doing a J-J vocab deck, which dictionary do you pull the definitions from? Or do you make them yourselves

Can anyone help me with the second sentence? I assume the first means that as long as the objective is achieved feeling bad afterwards is fine. But for the second one I don't even know where to start. "If [Subject] started talking mid way through it wouldn't have an end"?

once you're good enough to use a J-J dictionary do you really even need to bother with anki?

I always used Daijirin and Daijisen. Both have good definitions and are available online.

That said, I think using a J-J vocab deck was about the worst study decision I made. It just takes so much longer to get through them. While you do get extra exposure, dictionary definitions are the opposite of compelling content.

J-J is great for learning words but inefficient for reviewing words you know.

You can do that as soon as you want to. Not like there's some point at which you'll know every word used in a word's definition.

Yeah, I usually just look at the example sentence I got the word from and only bother reading the J-J definition if a can't remember the meaning after that

You can add dictionaries to Rikai and switch between them with shift + 1-9, although I've never added one myself. Not sure if you can use two dictionaries at once.

Not baiting, just thinking out loud. A series I followed didn't get the last few chapters translated, so I've been reading through it manually by using Google Translate.

Makes me wish I knew Japanese, but on the other hand I'm not sure I'd actually use it much outside of the occasional manga or light novel series so it's hard to convince myself to commit.

Doujin Japanese is pretty easy to learn. Just google Realkana and learn the kana, then read Tae Kim's basic and essential grammar sections and download KanjiTomo. That's about all you need to have a decent grasp on what's happening. Shouldn't take more than 10 hours.

when i got mad while learning hira and kana i would punch the shit out of my dresser until i couldn't feel my hand and after that i felt my retention went up and was able to remember stroke more easily

Thank you for the advice, I've been using Realkana to learn hiragana thus far.

For the record, it was for the series Boku Girl; most regular scanlation groups are still in the 70s while the series ended at chapter 107 a few weeks ago.

My guess is that the use of past tense here is some lazy way to do 〜たら, so this part of the sentence resolves to "if there's ever an occasion for making contact or something"

ある is very commonly used with こと in the sense that something exists that has to be done, this is also seen with its negative form ない

連絡することはない。
this would mean "you don't have to contact me"

"there was something you had to contact (me about)"
the fact that it's past tense here is similar to たら (or it could just be a transcription error, and it literally is たら), in that he's speaking from a perspective of somebody about to call him after it has already been hypothetically confirmed that there was something to contact him about, if that makes any sense, he is not referring to the actual present moment here

anyway I'm half sure you actually can put か here as a question marker and it works just fine, as a hypothetical question leading into a suggested course of action, but I might be tripping myself up with that

It's an online Anki and worth it if you're doing a separate kanji study as you can adjust the words to the kanji you know.

The quizzing makes the grind less boring than Anki but it has the big downside that you need to be online all the time to do something and the SRS is coded different so if you try something like 40 words a day in a couple weeks you'll be doing over 600-700 reps a day.

Also you can't import words as fast as with Anki and Rikaisama so...try it and see if it suits your tastes, otherwise go with the tried and proved Anki.

Does fish oil really make you smarter? If the answer is yes, can you back it up with a resource?

Learning proper stroke order can help you remember where you're supposed to add those little flairs, but mostly it's about as useful as learning cursive.

It's very useful if you're planning to use any kind of hand writing recognition stuff. whatever you scribble can look nothing like the original kanji, but if the stroke order is correct, it's usually recognized.
