The principal reason for the explosive activity this year is the circulation pattern in the tropical Atlantic, largely induced by the somewhat unanticipated strengthening La Nina event. Ocean heat content is very high and has been for several years in the Atlantic -- that is providing fuel to strengthen the hurricanes, but it isn't the initiator (otherwise we would have seen explosive activity the past few years as well). Enhanced convergence via suppressed low level shear has provided the atmospheric conditions necessary for rapidly intensifying cyclones, and the largely untapped OHC is providing the "firewood" so to speak, to feed the flames of the cyclones (the circulation pattern is the proverbial match).
