It's because of this weird mentality that you MUST do these kinds of things to truly experience life and grow as a person. Depending on the generation it was because they were the trend setters for it (Boomers) or mass media told them so (Gen X and later). I also theorize that when they see straight edge they think of what the opposite of normie was for their time which was the stereotypical DnD playing geek boy who spent all his hours playing WoW, doing vector calculus just for fun, and arguing over Star Wars lore and they see that as a bad thing.
In reality there are multiple pathways for life and growing up. Some people took the normie way and others took the non-normie way. Now that the normie way is slowly changing due to the fetishization of aspects of "geek culture" older generations can't quite grasp it and flip.
Also the punishment for doing all that old tier normie shit was a slap on the wrist at most. Now if a school catches you ditching, parents catch you with weed or alcohol, you'll be fucking crucified.
