FMA(2003) Better Than FMAB?

FMA(2003) Better Than FMAB?

I'm pretty sure most FMAfags would flog you for saying such a thing, but 2003 was still a pretty good episodic show.

Definitely if you watched it when it aired.

When they do the same thing FMA is better, but no, FMAB is better

Nah. Still good.

Yes

About to watch it. Should I watch 2003 first or just skip straight to Brotherhood?

You basically have to watch 2003 first which is unfortunate because Brotherhood will be a disappointment in comparison.

I think this is interchangeable depending on which one you watched first. Kind of like dubs and subs.

Nah. Watched 2003 when it aired -- was a great time for the internet anime community btw -- and it was awesome, but it falls apart towards the end. Brotherhood has delivers the goods from start to finish.

Now if you want to make it interesting, you ask which version had the better OP/ED themes. That shit gets tricky.

2003 had better EDs. FMAB had better OPs.

This guy gets it. 2003 was a great show, but brotherhood was even better imo

I thought that the first half-ish of it (where it and Brotherhood share the same story content) was way better than Brotherhood.

Once it veers into original content territory is where your mileage with it compared to Brotherhood may vary.

So, can someone explain to me how the first homunculus made with Hohenheim's blood knew so much about alchemy. He knew more than the person who made him, which makes no sense.

His entire backstory makes zero sense, it's best to just ignore it.

2003 homunculus>Brotherhood's by a mile

Just started Brotherhood.

What is different about the 2003 show? Doesn't it follow the manga?

It was made before the manga was even halfway done, so when they ran out of material to adapt they went original.

>Doesn't it follow the manga?
Yeah but it starts to fall off around the 40th episode if memory saves.

Guide to this anyone?

It was almost 15 years ago man. I can barely remember anything about it and am only using my nostalgia to fuel whatever knowledge I possibly have.

I like them about the same. 2003 definitely does some very interesting things.

Watch the original until about the halfway point, whenever they meet up with the 03 version of Wrath. Then switch over to Brotherhood.

Watched FMA first, unfortunately I did not enjoy FMAB. There was a "cutesy" aspect that drove me insane, to the point where I just stopped watching. Not sure if this is the answer you're looking for OP, but depending on what you watch first, the other seems to pale in comparison.

2003 Homunculus were cool in that they were actual people before and they let Greed and Lust live longer.

Also lets us get more invested in Hughes before they kill him.

They were pretty good characters as opposed to the saturday morning cartoon characters in brotherhood.

No. It's a glorified fanfic. Whether you actually like that fanfic, is up to you though.

A little sooner I'd say, right after best dad gets locked in a phonebooth. Then start watching Brotherhood at 11 or so, whenever it is they go to the automail town.

The homunculus was a piece of the 'god' that talks to people in that white plane. In the end, he goes back to behind the door he escaped from

>03 Pride/Wrath, Mustang, Envy
>good/better than their Brotherhood counterparts
Gave me a good laugh

Envy is literally better. Brotherhood pride is not even a character. Bradley is the same in both.

>Bradley is the same in both.
He really isn't at all, given he is an actual homunculus in 03 and an human turned homunculus in Brotherhood.

And it's the exact opposite for Pride, who retained a bit of humanity acting as Bradley's child enough that he became scared to die. He was nothing but a fodder human in 03.

Just the sheer fact that you stated that makes it bettter that the conversation ends here.

That makes very little sense. If he was a part of that "god" then wouldn't he have merged together with him or something. Instead of going into the portal truth.

>He really isn't at all, given he is an actual homunculus in 03 and an human turned homunculus in Brotherhood.
literally irrelevant, I'm talking about their characters.

>He was nothing but a fodder human in 03.
He actually had a backstory and emotion and motivation in 03, Pride in brotherhood is just generic evil guy who does bad things. That shit they tacked on 10 seconds before he died about being scared of death hardly makes for a significant character.

>Bradley is the same in both.

Wow.

I can't even...

03 superior
>Lust
>Sloth

Manga/Brotherhood superior
>Bradley
>Envy
>Pride (by technicality?)

about equal
>Greed
>Gluttony

a shit
>03 Wrath

It's been years since I last watched, so I think was was indeed wrong there. He's not part of the god, but was part of the truth of alchemy. He was one of those freaky things behind the door and they just happen to know the universe and alchemy completely.

Envy was my first trap love.

Is good, but Brotherhood is best. An incredible adaptation

Hugh's death in 03 was one of the most powerful moments even animated, they didn't event come close to that in brotherhood.

>a shit
Wrath

he cute as hell doe

Watch the dub no matter which version you choose.

I don't know why I have this

...

The first half of 2003 was better.

2003 does the origin story and some early arcs a bit better because they had to take their time with them since there was so little to adapt at the time, but overall Brotherhood is much better.

Are these two (and whoever else is included) still set on getting themselves killed for their warcrimes? Only thing that unsettled me about the ending, like it's happy all around but they never tied up that issue to my knowledge, it implies they haven't changed their minds.

I still can't get over the "Muh seismic energy" bullshit and all the inappropriate comedy in brotherhood

Silver Spoon>FMA

>Bradley is the same in both.

How man years ago did you watch 03 nigga

The fuck

What's so different about them? And no I don't mean powerlevel bullshit, I'm talking about their characters.

I felt that it was clear that Roy made peace with his demons and was going to use his power to atone for what he did.

No, don't do that. 2003, while it does adapt some of the early stuff better, still fucks around with details way too much, and by the end of Brotherhood nothing will make sense anymore if you try to mix them together.

Unless you specifically want to watch both in their entirety to compare them, just stick to Brotherhood, where they knew what would be important to the overall scheme and what wouldn't be and were able to construct a neat package around that.

>all the inappropriate comedy in brotherhood

Only complaint I have about it, but to the fair that shit was on the manga too.

Yeah and it was dumb in that too

Rewatch the scenes around when Marcoh offers to bring back his vision if he helps the Ishvalans.

So basically 2003 made it into a much more serious series than it was supposed to be and you two are mad because "muh headcanon".

More like I don't like stories that are completely tone deaf

What's up with humongous logic leap, nigga? FMA had some lighthearted moments and cliche "everyone becomes a chibi" comedy scenes on both versions. Brotherhood just had a tendency to smash them into your face in the middle of serious scenes, specially during the Briggs part.

That's a fault of the series and has nothing to do with which version I prefer. Grow the fuck up.

>the Briggs part.
christ that part was a slog, why did you remind me

Everything about Briggs was incredible.

loved it when even the music was serious and they still did silly comic yelling

no

I watched both recently and 2003 is a better show up until about episode 25 or so and then it slowly becomes shitter and shitter. 2003 however felt less "childish" at times and the character building was better. I would say that 2003 is almost mandatory viewing if you want to enjoy Brotherhood because of how it rushes through the first 15 episodes or so, and 2003 will give you a much better understanding of the world, characters and understandin

Brotherhood is better than 2003.

The original is always better.

Shunkan Sentimental and Let it Out were pretty boss though.

FMA 2003 did a few things better than Mangahood (Hughes death being the most notable) but Brotherhood is better all-around. Tighter story, better characterization, better villains, an ending that actually pays off, etc.

>The original is always better.

manga > 03 > Brotherhood

People need to stop watching Brotherhood before reading the manga, it cuts out so much good shit so hearing them blindly say it's better gets on my nerves.

I tried to watch fmab then fma and didn't get through fma. Neither are bad if you like the genre. But I just found brotherhood more interesting

When the source material has awkward shifts in tone like that, there's such a thing as being too faithful a rendition. Hellsing Ultimate was even worse in this regard.

You want the truth? Neither is strictly better than the other.

FMA 2003 has better pacing and a better soundtrack
FMA Brotherhood has a stronger overall story and more fun side-characters

>The original is always better.
Not sure if bait

Brotherhood has best girl.

This guy gets it.

It's better until the point it begins to divert from the original story. From then onwards Brotherhood is better.

Can confirm this is 100% accurate.

FMA 2003 has consistently better storyboarding, a more consistent tone and better music. Before Brotherhood came out 2003 was pretty widely respected. I think it's just MALfags that push the idea that it was incredibly inferior for not following the manga to a T. The beginning of 2003 is a thousand times better than the beginning of Brotherhood and what they did with the Homunculi origins was much more interesting and fleshed out.

But both shows go for completely different things and both are fucking awesome.

Brotherhood is kind of shitty. Panda girl was awful, Alphonse got trapped in that dome with the homunclus for like twenty episodes where he just sat around doing nothing, the final fight with Sloth was shit that dragged on for way too long. The only good thing about Brotherhood was: and I Lust's death was pretty hardcore.

FMA had a much better reveal of Wrath, and killing Martel, and the underground city.

The whole "gate leads to WWII Germany" thing was pretty stupid, but it was better than just a generic shounen fight that dragged on for twelve fucking episodes.

2003 was inconsistent but a better experience overall while Brotherhood was just meh throughout the whole thing.

Even if Brotherhood might be better for most people, I think everyone should experience 2003 first.

>but it was better than just a generic shounen fight that dragged on for twelve fucking episodes.
That shounenshit fight was so lame I think I'd rather take the random Nazi ending

Ignore those that tell you to watch only one.

Watch both, both are good and worth watching
even if the 2003 had an original second half, it is still worth watching.

So don't let anyone try to convice you otherwise.

I liked the show back in high school, but I would say if you're over the age of say, 20 max, you're probably not going to dig the show too much. It relies pretty heavily on having a cool setting/premise.

By all means check it out but y'know, don't feel bad if you don't like it. Mostly people remember liking this show, that doesn't mean they'd like it today.

underrated post
