Communism is the next stage of humanity following the capitalist stage and the socialist stage.
What exactly is communism according to Marxist-Leninists:

Ask your communist professors how many hours they work in a week, and why they can't make a living teaching communist principals on the outside of a college. Nationalism wasn't even present in Yugoslavia before the eighties because Tito made sure that his secret services execute and imprison everyone who expressed right wing views. Nationalism rose in the eighties as Milosevic used growing Serbian ressentment towards Albanians to centralise the government - however this nationalist rethoric wasnt welcomed by Croats and muslims.
In the end it wasnt about the nationalism but about the interests of the couple of high ranking secret service officers and politicians who couldnt agree on many issues and used nationalism to garner popular power.
