0-2 has never been that huge, dominated by giants like Anpanman, Hello Kitty, Winnie the Pooh and, more recently, Inai Inai Buu.
3-5 has always been a cold lock, with Anpanman and the flavours of the month below that (Youkai Watch, Aikatsu and Frozen, lately).
In 6-8, Precure was doing fine until it got bumped off #1 by Aikatsu, then knocked completely off Top-3 (Youkai Watch, Frozen and Aikatsu, in that order). With no monster hit to deal with this year, it's back on top with presumably a broad field beneath the top 3.
By 9-12, Precure is off the bottom and barely relevant anymore. I'm surprised the original series never made a dent, but during HC and Suite, they hit their peak (8%).
This was the overall (boys + girls, all ages) top 10 for 2016:

All their wishes are a variant of "I want to help [person]" or "I want to shine." The pink's wish is "I want to help everyone." The generals are a domineering woman with red hair, a foppish dandy with purple hair, and a wise-cracking cat. The final boss is a shady businessman who turns into an evil black sludge monster for his final form. The pink defeats him on her own with the power of her selfless wish.
