Also it has more to do with foundation myth of given society, religion plays a role here, but it's not the only thing that decides the fate of nations.
By 1830 there were 4 regions/countries that you could say were "industrialized" - Great Britain(protestant of sorts), Belgium(Catholic, don't remember if they were independent by then), France(Catholic) and semi-autonomous part of Russia called Kingdom of Poland(Catholic remotely ruled by Orthodox).
So why are 3 of those countries very well developed, while what was the most developed part of Poland in the 1830's, is one half the shittiest part of the country and the other half is meh at best(besides the capital and until recently Lodz)? The answer is - Poland(especially that central-eastern part of it) underwent massive shift in foundation myth in 1860's. After 3 big uprisings(1795, 1830, 1863), intelligentsia and aristocracy became concerned that there won't be any Poles left to fight in the 4th. The resulting conclusions and big social campaign that followed changed us from a socially which mentality, while distinct, was in many places in line with the more successful western Europe, into a society focused solely on survival of its people. Later events like Polish-Bolshevik war, WW2 or communism only strengthened it and the fact that you can see pretty similar ideas being common around the ex-eastern bloc is mostly caused by the fact that majority of the region experienced WW2 quite harshly and basically whole of it had to deal with commies.
This is obviously a double-edged sword. A society which foundation myth is focused on survival despite the odds is going to be less successful than a society which is founded on the great people and victories - like the west used to be(not anymore, as it is only Americans sort of cling to that loosely).
