There is nothing good about isekai

There is nothing good about isekai.

It is a horrible premise that lends itself to a uninspired self-insert power fantasies.

Some of the worst anime in recent memory have been isekai.

You know I'm right, Sup Forums. Just try and prove me wrong.

thinly veiled Isekai thread

what are you reading Sup Forums?

Why doesn't Drifters get shit when it's just multi-man isekai?

>He doesn't enjoy Re:Zero

Because nobody knows what it is.

a. because it's made from the mangaka of Hellsing
b. it's made by an actual professional and not a webnovel artist
c. no one is discussing it because a chapter comes out every blue moon

probably one of those reasons

>isekai
It's called Fantasy. Not even Japan uses the word "isekai" as genre.

Most of them are posted on a website called "Lets Become A Novelist!" and are usually amateur works that reek of rookie mistakes.
They are perfect for kids.
I don't remember anyone complaining about isekai when it was just ZnT or Those Who Hunt Elves though. Whats changed?

>I don't remember anyone complaining about isekai when it was just ZnT or Those Who Hunt Elves though. Whats changed?
Might want to look at the first part of your own post again.

They still use it as a descriptor.

This isn't Japan

I don't see the word "genre" anywhere in the OP.
In fact he called it a premise.

Just because you're correct doesn't mean you're right.

explain further.

Do we really need a state of the isekai general?

>state of the other world
Sounds like a title for a shitty Narou fix.

yes it's shit. however it's significantly better than the alternatives.

>the alternatives
Which are?

the alternative shows each season. for example rezero is the only thing i'm watching this season and i know it sucks.

Even fucking Hundred is better than Re:Shit.

it sucks hard

wtf are you talking about dude? Who doesn't like watching a kid with aspergers constantly die

rezero has some freshness to it. i don't care much to argue over which series is shittier than another.

It's a sub-genre at this point. Nips commonly refer to it as "異世界ファンタシー".

>Even fucking Hundred is better than Re:Shit.
There is nothing worse than Hundred

Infinite Stratos exists.

It's fucking bad because 99% of isekai is made as a self insert fantasy for spergs. Try to prove me wrong.

I wish I could, but I can't.

I like it and I'm not a sperg.
I'm just a fat, socially inept, basement dweller who lives with his mother and has a collection of semen stained body pillows. Most definitely not a sperg good sir.

what kind of rookie mistakes?

>enjoying shit

scatfag spotted

>shitpost about isekai
>OP image isn't isekai
I don't have a wew big enough for this lad.

Yes, some isekai shows are bad. But some of the best anime has isekai as its premise (12 kingdoms, spirited away, grimgar)

>Grimgar
>good
Do you like watching paint dry as well? Maybe with a few oddly interspersed music videos to ease up the monotony?

Grimgar had fantastic pacing. The director knew to give the scenes time to breathe.

Its really obvious with Kuma kuma kuma bear kuma since the author has notes about where he takes the story.
When you read those notes, and they exist for other stories too, you realize that they didn't even make an outline for how the story was going to go, did any editing, thought about pacing at all, went into infodump that didn't need to be there, and just padded chapters.
For me its a part of the charm of these stories that they can just fuck around and build a side story about cooking or what not but its clear the author has no real sense of where they wanted the story to go so everything suffers in the end.
This is why people get upset with isekai even though they don't really understand why or they point out various dumb things. From the beginning, they realize the story has zero substance behind it and is all fluff but they are okay with that as long as things wrap into each other nicely and characters get developed. When you just bring in a bunch of characters for no reason its clear you didn't have much of a point for them except for fanservice or filling a spot or some other nonsense like they get an arc then sit in the background until they show up again for a final battle or whatever.
Its so common in anime that people forget that good writing is self evident, for an example Kanstoppu! is a fairly good non-isekai with an OP protag that deals with troupe well by making her socially retarded from training for the past ten years and having to protect a bunch of noobs all the time. They also introduce enemies that the protag can't just power through, so the conflict is still very present despite the character being OP it doesn't degrade the story quality.
Like there's one part where all the soldiers are in awe that the MC saved the capital nearly solo and countless lives and they ask her to give them some advice on how to get stronger and she can't even grasp how to communicate it to them at all.

The same reason why you hate grimgar
likes it. Its not your usual fantasy or isekai especially with the memory wipe, and it mostly focuses on the characters struggles to work together and adapt to the world.
Usually anime characters get good rather fast and are on a high level for most of the series, in Grimgar its more about community and relationships rather than learning dual swords and hunting down the next god king.

How would you fix isekai, Sup Forums?

Isekai has been around for ages in shit like Narnia or tons of other western stories. It isn't some cancer on anime; it's just a common plot thread that is used everywhere. It's not bad in itself but it has the opportunity to be used poorly.

see You just need to not fuck it up. A good story always shines though despite what little twists or turns you put in or settings you add to it.
Like Kuromurkuro didn't really need for the MC to be a Samurai from the past, but it was well handled and they had his character grow along with the plot behind him to setup for the big reveal.
Most isekai's that are complained about borrow heavily from other shitty isekais, use rpg game mechanics, drain all tension from the series, and are usually masturbatory. Even then some people will enjoy them because of a good hook.
Slave Harem is a perfect example of a terrible isekai, where the isekai part is almost just to get you to self insert faster.
Tanaka the wizard isn't much different except the MC is a piece of shit fatty whose obsessed with virgins and wished for max lvl heal magic so he could cure STDs if he gets any.

Just because the "trapped in another world" plot has been fairly common since ancient times doesn't mean there isn't an excessive glut of them in the Japanese LN market as of late.

We're not talking a dozen new series every year with this premise. We're talking every fucking month, or week even. Publishers are shitting these turds out (or picking them off of the web) faster than 2ch can snark at.

>Slave Harem is a perfect example of a terrible isekai, where the isekai part is almost just to get you to self insert faster.
And then you realize that despite how bad Slave Harem is, an incredible number of people still enjoy it enough to propel it into the top rankings at Narou, and that there are dozens of shittier stories with the exact same premise that aren't even pandering enough to do that.

Make the isekai premise one of the natural laws of human society, and explore the logistics that can support the phenomenon. (See: )

>Some of the worst anime in recent memory have been isekai.
Yeah. Some of the best too. When you make a lot of something, that's how it tends to be. Unless you're seriously arguing that Konosuba and Re:Zero are on the same level as Endride. In which case you're an actual idiot. Try to enjoy things instead of deliberately looking for reasons not to.

>Slave Harem
>there's almost an exact copy of the story called Growth Cheat
>isekai
>labyrinth
>slaves
>sex with them
>dog girl main girl
>game like world
>MC gets multiple job classes and the ability to rearrange them

Because its mostly wish fulfillment porn combined with an RPG combat log.
I'll admit I enjoyed it for awhile, until the character interactions got stale and I realized Dwarfgirl will never get wise to his fucking cheating ass despite her high int.
I just want her to seriously confront him one day and force him to tell her the truth about all that bullshit he pulls with her. She spent her entire life strugging to do shit because she didn't have his basic skills and pretty much turns her into the equivalent of a master artisan overnight because of his bullshit and just tells her its because 'she's amazing'
that fucking cunt deserves a durandal up his ass

I hate that too, but I haven't found a good opportunity to bitch about it.

the steal ability ones are usually the worst though
Endride is pretty special example though because its a mobage anime and they deliberately wanted to make it a throwback to older fantasy shows with a wide interesting cast.
Just because they failed doesn't really make it a bad isekai. Its hard for me to call it anything but fantasy when the protag doesn't really bring anything to the table when it comes to coming from another world beyond not knowing shit about the fantasy world.

What can you even say as a criticism of anything the hellsing guy writes?
"Its too ridiculous"

>12k
>grimgar

12k is basically how to do suffering isekai right, unlike grimgar which is just boring.

Start with fixing the writing and the characters.

Endride is just really poorly made. I think it's fair to call it a bad show.
>Its hard for me to call it anything but fantasy when the protag doesn't really bring anything to the table when it comes to coming from another world beyond not knowing shit about the fantasy world.
By "bringing something to the table" are you referring to the recent trend of otaku using their game/anime-related knowledge in the other world? Because I'm fairly certain that's not a requirement for a show to be isekai.

This is correct.

Alright, who's here have read Brave Story?

>Like Kuromurkuro didn't really need for the MC to be a Samurai from the past, but it was well handled and they had his character grow along with the plot behind him to setup for the big reveal.
Thanks for the laugh

What's so bad about self inserting? I don't like to self insert as the MC or anything, I'd rather be my own mc, but I think it's fun to imagine being in the same fantasy world where all the anime bitches love me.

I might as well play a VN where I can decide what kind of MC I want to become.

By table I mean stuff like 'oh thats like guns in our world!" or 'we have electricity' or 'this is my japanese dish, fuck your shitty underworld food'
It is poorly made though, but I think thats just because they are pushing a mobage and the writers think they can push so many character plot points well and they can barely sell the main characters.
I know I'm right, laugh all you want. Miuna would not steer me wrong.
Its only bad when the MC is bland to the point where you can't even identify with his logic and decisions thus breaking the point of self-inserting in the first place.
Generally Sup Forums will say things like they like the Kaze no Stigma or Konosuba MCs because they have a healthy sexual interest in girls and don't hide it therefore the show gives them an outlet for letting their desires out in the open around girls.
Usually the beta MCs get shat upon because you need to be a 14 year old who doesn't even want to breach the subject because he's afraid of being seen as perverted or undesirable, which is why those characters exist commonly in series like hundred targeted at 14 year olds.
I think Overlord is one of those series that goes against that though because the MC is a beta type but it doesn't come across as annoying because he's 'selfish', paranoid, and literally lost his desire for sex.

but isekai isn't a premise, or setting or genre. having the protagonist come from another world doesn't mean hes over or under powered, or even that it takes place in a medieval fantasy. it can much bearing on the plot as the main character coming from another country, a lot of recent LN don't bring it to the story after the first chapter other than for their precious japanese food.

yeah isekai is pretty butchered but that's probably because it's an easy way to set up a back story, it's not inherent in the concept itself.

what is isekai
Is it just like shounenshit or moeshit where it's used as a scapegoat to blame why animu makes won't pander to you

world transfer, unlike shounen or moe concepts isekai generally gets lobbed into a very strict set of troupes that tend to repeat themselves over and over, such as the MC has a cheat ability, rpg game mechanics in the world, flat characters, no/low conflict in the plot, amateur writing and introducing characters just to collect them or have them do one thing then fuck off

...

SAO's sins are grave but I don't think we've gotten worse ones unless Grimgar and Log Horizon make you sleepier than Kirito's magical harem adventures

What's so bad about those? keep in mind i've seen neither of the 3

That's dull as fuck.

You can have interesting things happen in an Isekai without it devolving into SAO's sins. Even something as offensively mediocre as Kiba kept me from falling asleep.

Endride's issue is being an old school Isekai that's late to the party like Kiba and shitty animation.

No one takes "trapped in another world" premises starring normalfags ever since Marche was an MC of one or even earlier possibly when Digimon Frontier shat its own bed. Especially with its weak animation and music.

But Isekai is far better than the dog shit show in the picture you posted

Was frontier really bad? i don't remember much of it

SAO is everything wrong with fantasy masturbation and it baited slightly gullible people with a improbable death game premise (VR systems if mass produced can never fry brains). Either the cheesy middle school writing tier romance between Kirito and Asuna or the tryhard rape fairy made the gullible people hate it. Grimgar and Log Horizon are more character driven but they tend to be piles of non pacing.

Frontier's issues were pretty much being dumbed down clones of Adventure's kids + Power Rangers and the jobbing shenanigans after Cherubimon.

Frontier's character's are very flat and the important parts of it take 20+ episodes to gain steam.

A. Send more than 1-5 people to another world, like a whole city and don't make any of the humans "chosen ones" or such, everyone is a normal human. Or make them all chosen ones, whatever, the writing and characters are the most important part to me but this MC is super strong compared to everyone else or has hidden cheat like skills etc. is so boring. Doesn't help if his personality is that of a whiny bitch who only wants a normal life and is scared of touching girls. Then again it's the author's fault for making the heroines dumb sluts too.

B. Send people from other worlds to Earth. There's plenty of portals/gates/whatever and it's been decades (or longer) since people have been coming and going between worlds and the story can either be slice of life, people trying to figure out where the portals came, a ragtag group of aliens and such exploring different worlds or full war between worlds, dragons with jetpacks in space or whatever.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use a fucking VRMMO or any kind of VR setting. Not exactly isekai but sometimes people get pulled into another world while playing MMOs, Fuck that. Game things like stats, skills and level ups in real world can be good and fun, or fucking bad like in The Gamer.

As for fixing isekai, everything depends on the authors. I'm sure a good author can make anything fun to read. I guess the main problem with isekai is that the quality of writing from most authors is too low, like, they have an idea: MC goes to another world. But to the author, anything that doesn't concern the MC is irrelevant, there's no foreshadowing, suddenly some strong guy appears and MC's sidekicks or nearby peasants are like NO WAY IT'S THE SOME STRONG GUY, WE'RE DONE and they proceed to explain how this guy is the strongest in the country or some shit, he'll obviously lose to the MC. The list goes on but the writing is so centered towards the MC that nothing else matters as long as author can show how strong the MC can become.

Because not a single show is doing it right.

Here's one that isn't terrible.

Did her seriously acquire the biggest harem ever or what? Entire school pretty much wants his dick. Such a shame that OVA release and slow subs mean most people haven't even seen Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari.

because it's not a fucking retarded harem cocktease LN

EZ, user. Isekai as a plot hook is not bad. It's just the current wave of shit LN adaptations with laughable writing and mediocre as fuck art that is bad.

Just because the cup's filled with dirty water lately doesn't mean it's not a nice cup.

Yep, Kenshi beat his brother in terms of harem size.

Still waiting for another Tenchi series, and/or a continuation of Kenshi since it was somewhat hinted at the end.

>VR systems if mass produced can never fry brains
There's a lot wrong with SAO, but this has got to be the most useless complaint about it I've ever seen.

>Talks about isekai
>Posts SAO
wew

Agreed.
