Has there ever been a case of a man who lived his entire life in normal and unremarkable fashion deciding to do something so egregiously evil for no apparent reason in his old age? It doesn't seem likely - or even possible - that he just "snapped" and in response executed this extremely elaborate plan of incredible evil. People who "snap" might murder a particular person who really pissed them off, or shoot up a roomful of people they don't like before killing themselves. But you don't just "snap" one day and decide to pull off this sort of mass casualty attack. Attacks like this take quite a bit of deliberation and planning. This is something you have to want to do absent all emotion. You don't decide to potentially murder hundreds of people in a hot-headed rage, you do it with entirely cold blood. If he did actually do this, then clearly the motivation was ideological terrorism (whether Leftist or Islamic).

It's definitely possible that this guy was politically radicalized, but honestly, I think the patsy theory is just as likely as not. Two killers access his room and zip tie this old man, move their weapons in, set up, execute the attack, untie the old man, pop him in the head and leave him there as the suicided patsy and then GTFO before the cops arrive. Is it possible they could have escaped out the broken window using some sort of high-tech rapelling/fast-roping system? Or perhaps they simply walked out of the building dressed as police or in hotel staff uniforms. The patsy theory is certainly strengthened if it's true that the perpetrator(s) of the attack had monitoring systems in place to keep tabs on the police response, and if the SWAT officers that stormed the hotel room found Paddock already dead.

By most accounts this guy was emotionally flat and distant, an oddball. His father was a diagnosed psychopath. It wouldn't be a huge leap to speculate that he might have inherited this temperament, but lived his life as a non offending psychopath. His obsession with gambling would fit this model as several clinical descriptions of psychopathy suggest a link to risk taking.
My speculation, maybe he recently got himself into real deep shit with his gambling and decided to off himself. Being a psychopath, he might see this as a good opportunity to act out some violent fantasy that he has had all his life right before he goes.

Psychosis is not related to psychopathy. Psychopathy is a personality disorder, i.e a cluster of abnormal personality traits (mainly a complete lack of empathy and fear response). Many psychopaths do not grow up to be criminals if they are well socialized.
So as I said, I think it's more likely that he always had this desire but did not act on it. If he was going to kill himself anyway he had no reason to then not do it before he went.
