I guess I'd have to say either "The Real Folk Blues" from Cowboy Bebop...or..."Dress (Bloody Trinity Mix)" from Trinity Blood ("Dress" has the added bonus of getting me into Buck-Tick, now one of my favorite bands of all time).
Basically the entire FLCL soundtrack. That soundtrack just does shit to my feels

I don't know if I have a favorite as I love almost every song from *monogatari, as well as songs, themes, and other music inserts in other shows. Space Dandy had some fantastic montage songs. That's the problem with a visual/audio medium. A song that may get forgotten by itself now has emotional imagery tied with it making it stick that much more.

Hikaru Nara has the most plays, and I'd say it is probably my favourite.
99% of my music library is stuff from video games and anime, which I would have ignored if there wasn't a memory attached to each of them.

serious question, are there any americans that make music like this? i dont know how to describe it. I feel like contemporary latino music does have some music like these. But not sure about american.
There are so many OPs/EDs I listened to in music threads and didn't like that I ended up loving once I heard them in the show. An emotional link really does make a huge difference, especially when it's paired with appropriate visuals.
One example for me is Stray, which I thought sounded like lame dad rock before I watched Wolf's Rain. It kept getting posted in threads and I listened to it multiple times, but never liked it. Now I love it, and it's the sort of song I listen to alone at night in my car when I'm feeling melancholy and want to exacerbate it with the thought of dead wolf people. youtube.com/watch?v=MRwaHozoick
