The term "alt-right" is simply a description for the next generation of the Republican party. The term was coined in a joint effort by Democrats and old guard Republicans to try and isolate what they perceived as fringe elements of the Republican party that threatened their respective interests. The fact of the matter is that the "alt-right" is nothing more than the newest generation of Republicans, whom are more concerned with matters of nationalism then their predecessors.

I think they bought into the idea that the alt-right is an independent movement and figured they could make a quick buck and gain some fame by positioning themselves as it's leaders.

A more paranoid person might say they are planted agents to further divide the "alt-right" and mainstream Republicans, but I don't really buy that.

I like how you've distinguished between the true an false Alt-Right. I use the angle of discrediting Trump because ANTIFA goes against the President. Democrats and liberals hate Trump. If we approach the issue in the same way we only align ourselves with them in hate. Instead, its my way to support Trump when he does good and criticize when he does wrong. For example, I think North Korea should be left alone so I oppose him on this issue, but I agree with the wall. That's not how politics works. Political parties are not monolithic, multiple sets of views can exist under one banner. The far right moves the overtone window far enough to the right to allow alt-light cucks to exist, but the far right itself will never be politically viable.
