I'm going to assume you honestly don't know how banks operate (To be fair it is pretty fucked up the more you get into it.)
The banks have to use resources to keep your account "open", be it server space, maintenance, or just dicking with you - they need to be making money off your money. If you have an account with no balance and no transactions (Which they charge a small fee per transaction) then they charge you a maintenance fee.
If you do have money in the account, they re-invest your money into whatever the bank owner sees fit (though it's usually something safe and regulated like US Bonds or something) and thus the bank makes money on those investments, as a thank you for your patronage (opening the account with their bank instead of Competitor down the street) they give you a cut of that profit. Usually that cut is a pre-agreed % interest on your savings account and isn't actually tied to how much the bank makes off your money.
That's not even the fucked up part, just start looking into how the banks loan money out/collect on loans and the role of the Fed. America isn't the only one being cucked by the (((banks))) but it is pretty terrible here.
