What I don't quite get is why she was so hostile in the first place.
Was she really offended at how carefree Alpha seemed to be, or was she jealous of her somehow, like this chapter seemed to suggest?

I think jealous of how Kokone always talks about Alpha and how close they are. It was just an ordinary, petty grudge you can find everywhere, except between three female robots in the far dystopic future.

Maruko's personality leads her to want to control her life and the things within it, so when she makes a new friend who is hung up on some other robot, she has to go flex her muscle. It doesn't work because Alpha is Alpha, of course, so she eventually loosens up. She isn't above poking fun at her and saying she likes Kokone, but her last little petty thing is saying that she also likes Nai, who Alpha has, presumably, never talked to her about. (He's the boy robot and is also the person that sends "pictures" to Maruko to paint)

It's basically her trying to present that she holds all the cards, even if Kokone still wants to be with Alpha. "You know that rare and unique boy robot you met on your journey? Yeah, I know him too. So nyeh."
So, it may not be romantic, but it is a power dynamic.
