The first OP perfectly presented the characters, their factions, the centeral conflict they were involved in, and the thenes of the show. The songs tone was grandiose with lyrics that were very suited to the show, and it was perfectly choreographed to the visuals. It felt like it was made by people that loved and understood the manga.
The second OP was a meaningless clusterfuck in every sense of the word. It was just filled with overly edgy imagery that didn't correlate with the show, presented the characters in ways they'd never acted, and overall said nothing about the story itself. I myself am a fan of nu metal, and I personally don't dislike the song itself, but it wasn't suited to Death Note in ANY way. I don't think the people who made it had even touched a single volume of the manga.
