Anyone here collect Anime on VHS or Laserdisc?

Just thought I'd ask.

How are your VHS flying?

I've been looking for a LD player forever. If I could find one, I'd start an anime collection for it.

Where can you even order anime on laserdisc anymore? I've been looking for a Copy of Armor Hunter Mellowlink for fucking EVER and never even seen it go for sale.

Thinking of picking up YKK for maximum comfort. Seems like the perfect laserdisc since it's all atmosphere with very little dialogue.

>Seems like the perfect laserdisc since it's all atmosphere with very little dialogue.

I don't follow the logic?

>VHS
Enjoy your analogical degradation-

Anyway, I'm too young to have any VHS. And I think I dropped CDs as soon as I discovered external HDDs.

I don't know enough japanese to really watch Raw anime, & 95% of the anime on laserdisc is Japanese only.

Also trying to get all of Serial experiments Lain on VHS. It is objectively the best way to experience that show.

>Enjoy your analogical degradation

Mostly caused by shitty VCRs. I hear the later machines keep that to a minimum. Shame Beta never took off, but I do love me some huge VHS boxes.

My dream is to find Japanese 80's-00's anime VHS tapes with commercial breaks.

What's the point of collecting non-official VHS? Can't you just record from your computer?

You will never be this cool

>not building a Dragonball Z wall

Even finding american VHS tapes with commercial breaks is hard. I frequent garage sales for them constantly & never find any.

Collecting fansubbed VHS tapes that passed through 1000 people's hands in the 80s & 90s is kinda cool. It's just something fun to do.

Isn't that the picture of that guy's collection that his wife forced him to give away?

>HGX gold
at least he had good taste in blank tapes

In local Japanese used bookstores and music shops, I can still find a ton of old anime LDs.

So I have to visit Japan then. well, better do that soon anyway, before the Olympics ruin everything.

Ebay has a bunch. Also try going to a anime con.

Went to Acen once in illinois. Plenty of VHS tapes, no laserdisc in sight.

You can try anywhere with a Japanese community, it doesn't have to be in Japan.

I've seen some at the Chicago comicon once but they were insanely overpriced. But your best bet is to go to nipland and try to get some good LDs.

Is there a japantown in Chicago just like how they have an indiatown? I have some business there later in the week & could do some looking around there.

Dunno I was just there for that and the museums. If there is I doubt it would have that. Look for anime shops in Chicago.

God, Gunbuster is so cute-cool.

The berserk laserdiscs are beautiful too.

As someone who lived through the VHS era, no.

I'm convinced this doesn't exist unless someone can prove they own a copy. If it does, they must have only made 12 copies. Collecting for laserdisc seems fucking impossible.

Laserdisc covers were something else.

Couldn't they put the DaDon's LaserDiscs somewhere else?
It's too big for no good reason.

Who wouldn't want to own this?

$500.

I guess they have a monopoly on images. I mean really, who owns a copy of kiki's delivery service on laserdisc, let alone takes the time to make a picture of it.

>$40 for TWO episodes of Evangelion

I'm glad we no longer pay voice actors anything. Those were dark times. Being able to pick up a VHS of trigun for $3 now would have blown my kid self's mind.

Are you a bad enough dude to own Dragonball Z on VHS?

I have a couple of fansubbed VHS tapes lying around, stuff like 3x3 Eyes and Dominion Tank Police. Pretty much what got me into animu to begin with.

There's some things I want on VHS just to say I have them.

>there will never be any reasonable excuse to have enormous covers again

This is a bad feeling. A very bad feeling.

youtube.com/watch?v=JlBLcLdTYr4

Reminder again that VHS is the eternal superior format.

Just having a physical copy of anything these days is getting rare. Nobody seems to want to own anything anymore. I guess anime because a really disposable throwaway thing once streaming hit.

Exactly why I said it's best on VHS. It actually enhances the show in that one specific instance.

I have a feeling this will be a good thread.

Kinda, if I see a title on VHS I dont own I buy it, some ive owned for years

A E S T H E T I C

Why sideways? You could be organizing that better.

>Nobody seems to want to own anything anymore
Shit constantly is piling up, I want to store more important things than anime on my shelves (for instance merchandise.)

Sell some stuff you don't want then? How much could you possibly own.

They stack better, VHS boxes are ridged
I dont have much shelf space left

youtube.com/watch?v=r1s8VwmtIcY

I can't get enough of this cheesy VHS aesthetic.

>you pop in that VHS tape
>Suddenly bombared with 100 anime previews at once
>no money for any of them

This shit got me so pumped.

youtube.com/watch?v=wBMfeiJShN0

youtube.com/watch?v=STvs0TvUaFA

Pop in a Manga video VHS
This is the first thing played
youtube.com/watch?v=eCfDxZxTBW4

Back then i didnt know all of them, so getting a new tape that had a bit from that short intro was a major smile moment

>that Yu-Gi-Oh preview

Oh man, that brings me back.

...

IS it just me or did anime get really fucking gay in the last 10 years? I miss when it was so unapologeticly manly & violent. People love violence, so why did it disappear from anime?

>Mellowlink on the upper left

That's not yours right? I've been looking for a complete set forever. I've also seen that M.D. Geist laserdisc being sold for over $100 on eBay. No idea if it's actually worth that much though.

Mellowlink sets are on Yahoo Auctions every once in a while and the individual 6 laserdiscs were on Rakuten last time I checked.

MD Geist is usually $100 but I got mine for $18.

>Isn't that the picture of that guy's collection that his wife forced him to give away?

>How to be a complete fucking beta and a fail a shit-test

Brotip: If you value pussy over your own hobbies, you'll actually lose said pussy in the process. No 3DPD likes a pushover bitch.

Violence is still about.
Its just toned down a lot, probably because even now US cartoons have it toned down a lot and they are trying to sell a lot to the US market

So that's where all the laserdiscs have been hiding. How do you order Laserdiscs off Yahoo japan if you live in the U.S.? I need this now.

page3.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/c564878281

Use Buyee but expect to pay upwards of $60 for shipping if you are going to buy a box set.
>page3.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/c564878281
This one is missing the 2 CDs

You shouldn't let your hobby define you, but you shouldn't let your girlfriend define you either.

>it's me or the anime

Easy choice. If you find a girl into anime on laserdisc though, you marry her on the spot.

What CDs does it usually come with? Soundtrack & maybe some audio drama? There's so little info about laserdiscs out there that I can't even find what a complete box set is suppose to look like.

I only have the VHS of my one and only legit VHS anime purchase, which has my waifu since I was a teen; Tenchi Muyo OVA 1 (Eps 1-6 plus bonus ep 7 i think).

Ryoko4Lyfe bitches.

OVA Cover 1 actually has one of the best Ryoko pics to date on it. Pic related.

>I hear the later machines keep that to a minimum

It's the opposite actually. VCRs got really bad in the 90s because the manufacturers started really cutting corners to make them cheaper. Probably the best VCRs are from 1987 to 1994. I have old tapes that won't track on newer machines but older ones play them fine.

Most already are.............
Ive never seen any on Lazerdisc in the wild (sod Ebay)

Dont go for those that put on more make-up than Harley Quin (urgh) and have a shoe collection

or just be gay

Yeah that, its easier

>it's canon that tenchi had sex & kids with ALLLL the girls
>he even fucked the space ship cat rabbit

I wish more shows ended like that. Way to blow the fuck out of every waifu fan at the same time. Say what you want about tenchi, but that is alpha as fuck.

Um. Japs don't give a shit about mmurrica, not when deciding on anime sales anyway.
Uguu kawaii shit just sells really well because Japan is the land of cute. Not to mention dorky awkward males that can't get girls so they live their lives in an internal fantasy land with their waifus, away from their stressful society.

I used to have more card captors and some pokemon vhs as well along with a yugioh anime preview that was Pegasus inviting you, not sure where they are

So it's the same thing with cassette tape players too then? I've been told to be on the lookout for boomboxes & ghettoblasters from that timeframe.

Any specific VCR you can recommend? I've got a laserdisc, but I think it's dead since it won't power on & I can't be bothered to open it up. Probably dead caps.

Yeah, the guy who first posted that picture said that it all came from one guy who was forced to give it away after he got married. That said, he might have been clearing space for a baby, a lot of guys shitcan their hobbies once they have a babby.

Apparently some of the stuff in it has never been digitized either, so it's a pretty important haul. There's hundreds and hundreds of tapes that all needed cataloging and archiving.

It is supposed to have 2 soundtracks CDs. But the description says it is missing from that one:
>>page3.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/c564878281
>CDはありません。

God damn that is beautiful. It's one of those rare cases where the Laserdisc is better than the DVD version too. Apparently the master rapes got lost in a fire.

I'll be honest dude, the franchise went to shit and I didn't really keep up with it because it was obvious they were milking it. Also OVA 3 left a very very sour taste in my mouth.

For me it'll always be OVA 1, maybe 2 (quality dropped), and the 3rd movie, which was fantastic. Everything else went to shit. The best art was in OVA 1 also, so much heart, sweat and tears went into that production.

Tenchi fucking everyone was a massive cop out. Ah well.

Does it really matter? I think it's pretty funny.

Is there a list? Dont think any of mine qulify, but can be on the look out

The only things on VHS I have that aren't online aren't anime.

If you have something that isn't on bakabt, odds are you should upload it. Hell, make a topic about it. Archiving that stuff is important.

I like u, only cause I assume you were there when this was first posted.

The UK eidt of Street fighter 2 V

They edited out a few things what stands out is the guys with nunchucks that where shown IN THE RECAP and they had a build up to it

But ill have a look, its unlikley

Lain was truly ahead of its time

i have some old pokemon and sailor moon tapes but im too afraid to watch them becasue im afraid the vcr will chew up the tapes like they sometimes did

I watch the Urban Vision intro of Twilight of the Dark Master so much my vhs quality at that point was degraded. By the time I actually watched it I was so hyped it disappointed.

youtu.be/z_a4YxqJ-rg?t=3m30s

I recently watched twilight of the dark masters for the first time, was one of the strangest things iv ever seen. Gotta love urban visions stuff they released always so fucking weird.

Yep, I started around 2009 or so converting most of my anime to VHS. I started with Spice and Wolf on EP/SLP for 8 hours of fun. I have close to 60 or 70 tapes now. All SCOTCH brand and a few metals thrown in there for my favorite series.

Panasonic 6 head VHS with auto tracking and dolby NR. Also one of the few with s-video output for superior video output by separating the luminance and chromiance.

I need to start collecting LD the artwork alone is worth the buy. Also does anyone here collect cels? I was wanting to get into that too but it seems that there are a great deal of reprints and reproduction cels out there. How do you tell if it is genuine?

Never buy an Eva cell, they're all fakes.

Does anno have them all?

Only classic kiddie porn i get from friends that I haven't converted yet.

Why would I care if it's fake if it looks almost the same?

Wasn't m00t getting into LD's before he ascended to internet Valhalla? (google). Remember him posting his Gundam 0083 LD's.

Anyways, I want to eventually import the old box set of key, it had a REALLY fucking nice LD box.

We don't talk about him anymore.

For VHS, look pre 1994, made in Japan or Europe, and avoid Sony, they never made great VHS decks. JVC, Panasonic (Quasar), Hitachi, Sharp, Mitsubishi, all the big Jap brands are good. The Europeans like Philips (branded Magnavox or Norelco in the US), Telefunken, Grundig (one of the only non Japanese makers that designed their own tape transports from scratch), Thomson are good too, but they didn't sell many in NTSC countries. Avoid the lower tier japanese and korean brands.

Remember that a lot of companies made decks for others (most RCA and Zenith decks from the 80s were made by JVC). After 1994 or soeveryone got the outsourcing bug and quality dropped hard.

He got the LD collection of gundam, gundam z, LOGH, GITS movie and something else. He got it at a garage sale for like $50. The LOGH set alone goes for around $1200.

I'm learning so much today. Thankyou. What about video quality? Do any VCRs benefit from S-Video, or even RGB?

only vhs tapes i have is bubblegum crisis series

>Do any VCRs benefit from S-Video, or even RGB?

Not really, because the video on the tape is composite. The scaling chip in a modern HDTV will do a better job separating out the color subcarrier than any VCR will. (This is also true for laserdisc). It might for S-VHS but I never got into that.

>So it's the same thing with cassette tape players too then? I've been told to be on the lookout for boomboxes & ghettoblasters from that timeframe.

And it is mostly the same for casette decks. Though for boomboxes is mostly because of their cultural value, most of them weren't great.

And you can spend insane money on a good tape deck, take a look at the prices of old Nakamichi and Tandberg gear.
