Anime are basically glorified adverts for LNs most of the time. This is probably EXACTLY what they hoped for when they greenlit the anime. The question is why they picked Re:Zero? Did someone at kadokawa just really like it? Did they think it just hadn't gained the traction it needed? It is pretty strange.
