This. The campaign on Guadalcanal is the perfect example. Americans were inches from losing, even after midway evened the playing field as far as navy goes. Japan's cockiness and reliance on "spirit" and suicidal frontal assaults lost it for them. They could have easily won the whole damn thing and hit the US mainland but they were too used to fighting chinese peasants.
