I'm not sure why they didn't gouge out both eyes. However, it stated that when the whale made clones it got weaker, so maybe grandpa's original attacks just weren't able to do fatal damage until that happened. It had an antimagic hide that was resisting the cannons. Cannons were only really meant to ground it so it could be finished off, but it's antimagic was tougher than thought.

Why does Japan still hunt whales? It is absolutely barbaric.
Whales are highly intelligent and sentient creatures exiting in the same order of mammalia as us. While they can be a source of cheap meat, Japan could just as easily leverage stopping their whaling activities to gain money and trade from the UN to offset the loss to their economy.
I understand that whaling has cultural significance to Japan, but it is 2016 and literally time to stop.

The only hard hitters were the ones who were slice and dicing, shooting magic beams (which were not too effective because of the hair that absorbs magical impact), the ground squadron that were Crusche's troops were probably meant for when the whale hits down. But I agree they didn't do much. The silver fang was much more efficient and effective than them since they used magic and were able to stab the whale.
