Torrents tends to be an exception because you already have a SHA1 info hash, but it depends on torrent parameters instead of only on the file itself.

A CRC is a hash function.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hash_function

When trying to find a place to download a release, you'll often run into the problem of, "how do I know if this release is untouched?" Ideally you want to avoid reencoded and remuxed copies (or in the case of doujinshi/manga, resizing/cropping/size optimization).

You know the release exists, and you can usually find a name that was given to the release, but there's a good chance the release group's source is dead. With no information about the original release other than it's name, you typically wouldn't be able to tell if a release is untouched.

However, if you have the hash value of a release's data, you can. Typically, the hash function is chosen such that making edits to the release will change the hash value.

So one way to let downloaders know a release is untouched is to include a hash value in the name. (Provided the character length of a hash value is short, it will naturally travel with the release name as the release spreads.) This way, the user can calculate the hash function for the version they downloaded, and if the hash value matches the one given in the name, then they know it is untouched.

However, how well a hash function is suited for this purpose depends on the hash function itself. The uncompressed file size of a release generally makes for a bad hash function, because it only depends on the length of the data; you can change the data as much as you want, but as long as the size remains the same, the hash value won't change.

Part 1/2

Part 2/2

The CRC is a better hash function. The hash value (for CRC32) is only 8 hexademical digits, so it's not long enough for most people to bother truncating it when spreading the release name. It's certainly not cryptographically secure, in the sense that it's feasible to find a change you can make that keeps the hash value the same. But it's practically impossible that any kind of editing will keep the CRC the same, at least when not intentionally trying to circumvent the hash function. It's also very fast to compute, relative to more cryptographically secure hash functions. Anime releases that are meant for archival will often have a CRC appended to their name because of this.

When creating a torrent for a release, the info hash (SHA1) will include the release data, but it will also include many other parameters not relevant to the release data, e.g. the number of pieces, the size of a piece. So different torrents will contain different info hashes, despite having the same release. The torrent info hash is only really good for finding trackers (also technically you can download a torrent with just an info hash, but without trackers, progress may be non-existent).

Maybe you can convince Tenboro to add CRC for all the galleries. kek.

Can you name one other type of release besides anime that you've seen put the hash check in the filename? Or, provide it all really.

You basically doesn't know how CRC32 works. it's easy to manipulate.

nayuki.io/page/forcing-a-files-crc-to-any-value

That would only be if he's interested in archival, otherwise it's just more work on the back end and complicates the UX.

Like I said earlier, the CRC32 is not cryptographically secure. It's feasible to find a way to change the file while keeping the same CRC32. You've demonstrated that in your link.

However, I contend that the deliberate changes you would need to make to keep that CRC32 are practically never introduced by innocuous editing of the release; one has to intentionally attempt to circumvent the hash function.

This is an odd request, but do you guys remember the last time you guys thought a doujin's dialogue was actually good?

There shouldn't be any dialogue. Art only.

It's a fairly niche use case with a few requirements for the solution to be tenable, which is why you rarely see it used outside anime. For one, it depends on what a release group really means in the context, and how they distribute their release.

Take for example music. There's no real editing that needs to take place for music, since it's largely distributed digitally nowadays. Anyone can upload music, and it's no better and no worse than another upload that was obtained digitally. You could think of it as there being one definitive source for the music, but the source is never really available for downloaders (aka it costs money). Moreover, it's not like song distributors would provide hash checks (software distributors are a different story), so there's no real way to verify the authenticity other than paying for it.

So instead what happens is that verification is effectively crowd-sourced through private trackers. Bad uploads are booted, and the uploaders punished. In a sense, the private tracker acts as the release group, with the info hash as the hash value and a download link that never dies (the torrent). The info hash itself is hidden away in the bittorrent protocol. That's not to say there aren't actual music release groups, or that the music scene doesn't exist, but it's practically dead due to this deskilling.
firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/5546/4125

Copyrighted material in general has it's own set of rules that are used by release groups.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warez_scene
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_(warez)

This is another area where anime and manga/doujinshi differs; since copyrights on these are comparatively rarely enforced, release groups haven't really been driven underground yet.

Part 1/2

Part 2/2

Software in particular has hash checks, but they're rarely distributed in the filename. They use more cryptographically secure methods, specifically code signing
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_signing
This is because the authenticity of software matters much more, as it's more dangerous to use software of unknown origin compared to something like media playback. There are exceptions though for non-executables, e.g. software distributed through ISO files
msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/downloads/hh442898.aspx
Keygens don't really need verification because you can just run them in a VM for safety, and you find out first-hand whether it works. Cracked software is a much trickier story. Cracking itself is seen as an accomplishment in it's own right, so releases aren't always intended to be user-centric (rather they're leaks). They can be for the sake of reputation, with mass distribution even being discouraged. Software versions and options/packages are easy to check for; it's the quality of the crack that's the issue. The dangerous part (whether it contains a virus) can be checked by your own AV software or online AV sites like VirusTotal, while how well the crack works is just determined by using it. Here too, it often comes down to the tracker/site to boot poor quality cracks.

If you looked at the original torrents for what you were complaining about, you'd see that some have .sfv files.
Isn't that good enough?

I think you might have me confused with another poster.

If you are Then no, I haven't.

or just looked and see they also included checksums.sfv in the directories as well.

Does anyone know of an english translated release that was about a loli maid waking up her master?

It was uploaded within the last month or so and now I can't find it and it's driving me nuts.

I can only assume it was taken down for wani content, since I remember the artist had only one other work on sadpanda, and I think that was a doujin.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please respond give me a name or at least post alternate sites that might have it, this is driving me nuts.

It was released by Fakku months ago and then the translator released their version a month later and had no idea that Fakku had already done it.

It's in the batch Fakku rips and other the wani site listed in this thread.

You're fighting the good fight brother.
Keep on defending the purity of our galleries from mixed content. Inferior scans have no place among us. Let's work together to purge these bastards. Follow the rules or perish. They ought to be all banned.

I would do literally anything for the source of this image. It's impossible to find with Google/SauceNao/Iqdb because it's cropped and probably the text is edited.

Please, have mercy.

It's called "Morning Maid", by Amezawa Koma.

Also, what this user says:

>untagged scat surprise

its from 2014 how does this happen

Tag it, for the well-fapping of us all!

I see a nipple!!!

>Only 4 pages of Akazawa Red

Didn't notice that for some of the rips. It's nice for the rippers to provide sfv, especially for the cases where their files aren't being distributed through torrent, but it doesn't really solve the problem, as the checksums aren't being coupled with the release name.

The good news is that anyone who discovers the site now (and believes the site rips to be the original/high quality), but doesn't want to download the entire rip, can just download the checksum file. Later, if the site and torrents end up dead, the user can just download the releases from anywhere, and confirm the checksums match. The bad news is it becomes impossible to tell whether a release is the original without the checksum file, which is a problem for future users.

Why are BeNantoka's facial expressions so based?

Found it for you dawg
exhentai.org/g/513301/f999389435/

Almost everything listed there is from torrents.
Are you not aware of them?
I guess not.

No, like I said, if the site and torrents end up dead.

I'll pass your concerns on to the rippers.

What if people remove the checksum from the filename and then share it?

Thanks so much, I'll keep looking for the non-fakku version, but just an author name and title was a great help.

damn beat me to it, the art looked so familiar! I remembered this used to get posted all the time when Sup Forums loved christmas cakes

Gotta say I expected the new Behind Moon doujin to be up by now.

I thought Dulce Report had a following.

If you want stuff done, you have to do it or fund it yourself.

Behind Moon's previous comiket uploads:
C86 (mid-August) - October 5th
C87 (end of year) - February 5th
C88 (mid-August) - September 19th
C89 (end of year) - February 8th

It's now been 11 days since C90 ended. Your expectations were weird.

>providing facts to someone who uses their personal feelings to determine everything
Why bother?

Sorry I've been out for like a week
Any new Shiwasu Okina stuff from C90?

That's one of the reasons why the CRC32 is used, is because it's short (only 8 hexadecimal digits). Of course, some people will remove it from the release filename, but as long as a version with the CRC can be found through google, the checksum can be determined.

The basic idea is that release groups want to embed information in such a way that it persists even after the group's site dies. What's guaranteed to propagate through sharing the release is the image (but with potentially degraded quality) and the release name (but with potential mutations).

It's very hard to tell what the original version of an image was, especially since some sites upscale or bloat images. However, people won't intentionally put random checksums in release names. Some searching should yield some versions of the release name with the checksum, and some without. So determining the checksum isn't too painful.

Other possibilities include embedding checksum information in file metadata (e.g. in the credits page metadata), but this is less likely to be noticed, and many sites will by default clear file metadata to reduce unnecessary storage. You could also put them visually in the credits page, even using a QR code to aid automated scripts, but there are other complications that arise.

Part 1/2

Part 2/2

In particular, CRCs are typically computed on a per-file basis. It can be computed on a group of files, but there has to be a well-defined order to those files. Since hosting sites may switch the order of pages, this has to be done in a deterministic way that's intrinsic to the data being hashed (e.g. sorted by file data), but there's no standard for this. This makes computing a group CRC difficult, as it effectively mandates a specific software be used to compute the hash.

Alternatively, you can include the CRCs for every file, but if you don't put them in their respective release filenames, they're all going to have to go inside a dummy file, which practically has to be the credits page if you expect it to be propagated. This makes visual checksums impossible though for 200+ page releases, and you can also run into metadata length restrictions. The easiest and most visible place to put the CRCs is the release filenames.

>I'll keep looking for the non-fakku version

Why would you look for a worse version when you could get a better one?

It's an artbook, what do you expect?
They all look like this, pretty much. You're lucky there's any dicks to begin with.

But the fakku version is the best version...

I fully agree with this policy for everything going forward but it could cause problems for some of the really old stuff. Are the individual chapters for all of those still there? Were they ever even released as such?

I'm pretty sure that's been expunged because of pages 120-123 (mixing translated English pages with raw Japanese pages has always been forbidden), not because it uses a mixture of tank/magazine scans

>not because it uses a mixture of tank/magazine scans
This is also against the rules.

Shlong

>being a jew

>he pays for porn

That sounds new to me, but the expunging rules on the wiki don't mention either cases, so I guess we'll have to wait until Joe shows up in a puff of smoke to confirm/deny it

Not the guy you're replying to and I dislike Fakku as much the next person, but it's simply retarded to try to deny that Fakku's scans are high quality. I can't vouch for the translation since I don't speak moon, but the editing is generally a solid notch above average (and I say this as an editor)

exhentai.org/g/969249/1373a355c2/

Better than nothing, I guess?

Doesn't come up much because almost no one does it but yeah, mixing scans is generally a no-no.

So you did translate it. lol.

Yes, they also did the official translation of ShindoL's latest work, which is why you can't find it in English on sadpanda (well, there's an expunged version right now but it's going to be removed soon)

>Plus the fan translation came out after, so I'm sure it used the fakku release for reference making the whole thing easier
You really think that person would have wasted their time if they knew it was already translated?

Post beautiful moments in panda.

...

>the translator had no idea that Fakku had already done it.
I asked them about it. They wouldn't have if they knew.

...

Phoenix Syndicate did it, not Fakku.
Also, it was DaHootch, not just ShindoL.
Try to provide correct information.
Looks they've rebranded to Shikimaya though.

Phoenix Syndicate is hosted on Fakku and is considered part of Fakku on Sadpanda, hence why at least one gallery has been removed and another one has been expunged and is going to be removed soon
And ShindoL is still the only official member of DA HOOTCH (his site literally says "DaHootch/ShindoL"), so no need to get OCD about it
