Communism is the next stage of humanity following the capitalist stage and the socialist stage.

What exactly is communism according to Marxist-Leninists:

The most damning critique of Marxism thus far has come from V. K. Dmitriev (1898) and Ladislaus von Bortkiewicz (1906):

Basically Marx tried to argue in "Manifesto" and "Kapital" that 2+2=7 (7 being the uptopia where a) workers were no longer exploited and b) profits would grow), however when you correct his mathematical mistakes to where 2+2=4 then not only would workers be exploited MORE, but it would be the ONLY source of profit since things like speculation, stock market, investment, capital gains, etc. (which exist in Capitalism) would no longer exist as a means of profit in a communist economic model. It literally would and always has exploited the worker more than Capitalism ever has.
The mechanisms of Capitalism have corrected the exploitation of workers far more smoothly than any communist country ever has.

"To each according to his contribution" is a principle of distribution considered to be one of the defining features of socialism.

The principle has its roots in the way that capitalism manages its affairs. That is, each is rewarded according to how much he produces. Remuneration increases as the amount of labor contributed increases. However within capitalism, the means of production are owned by a small minority who do not produce, but rather live off the labor of others. Socialism is said to remedy this by putting the means of production in common hands and rewarding individuals according to their contributions.

A key part of Marxist philosophy is the idea of historical determinism - that basically just as you could predict with absolute certainly the path of a particle through space based on the laws of physics, you could predict with absolute certainly the course of a society through history based on the laws of human nature. And, of course, Marx believed that communism was inevitable.

It was Marx's belief that he observed throughout history a rapid trend towards the destruction of states, the ruling class, and the class struggles that perpetuated both. You can see his logic thusly:

Which is completely retarded for several reasons, but let's focus on Marx's own logic.

Nothing about history is linear. The Ancient era had both humanity's first republics and democracies as well as its first monarchies and theocracies, and the Medieval era actually had more than a few republican notions too. The Holy Roman Empire, for example, had that whole 'vote for a ruler' thing going on; and England quickly established a parliamentary system well before industrialization. 'Archaic traits' of early societies persisted too, from tribal affiliations to god-kings to slavery; well into our futuristic year of 2017.

Marx saw a trend in history, but it was only the trend of history itself. Humans learn from past events and get better at managing their societies. But at no point did anyone think to themselves "hey, now seems about the time to stop using Feudalism and stuff". Japan and India are arguably still Feudal today, and they hardly suffer for it.

Ultimately, there's absolutely no reason to believe that the 'course of history' will inevitably lead to better circumstances for humanity, or a society where property is distributed more fairly or where nobody goes hungry or whatever.

One can clearly see the divide between what capitalism calls progress and what communism calls progress in the very different lives of the Concorde and Tu-144. Both were supersonic civilian transport jets built around the same time, using much the same technology. The Concorde was intended to be used by wealthy businesspeople who needed to cross the Atlantic Ocean quickly and in 'luxury', which seemed perfect for a quiet supersonic jet. The Tu-144, however, was loud and made from blueprints stolen from the West, and to serve the role of... ?????

Think about it. In a communist society, where everyone is classless and equal, what purpose does an experimental civilian jet plane serve? What does it matter if it will let you cross Russia in a few hours? You should be proud to fly an efficient working class plane, and wait during the long flight with everyone else. And ultimately, the Tu-144 didn't even fly from Moscow to Vladivostok or Moscow to Havanna. It flew short routes to Kazakhstan, because of mechanical concerns and fuel costs. The Tu-144 was a pointless symbol of false Soviet superiority, and lasted only a few months.

Meanwhile, the Concorde lasted decades. Maybe it wasn't really the best idea, fuel costs did kill it in the end and it ceased to be luxury to fly a few hours in cramped seats when you could spend all day in the comfort of first class on a subsonic plane, but it was at least TRIED. Progress was attempted.

So think about the future of humanity. Space. Colonizing the moon. Mars. Etc.

Who would have really done it? Communism, or capitalism? Would a communist governed Earth really waste resources to put a select few on a flight to Mars, or would they leave them on Earth with the rest of the working class?
