The funny story is that Rumiko intended Shinobu to be the heroine of a very short story.
People liked Lum so much the higher ups asked Rumiko's editor to give the heroine's role to Lum and to spam more chapters of that specific story, it gave bith to our beloved Urusei Yatsura.
