Read about acquired immunity and antibody proliferation. Being able to recognize a pathogen means the immune system overwhelms the pathogens ability to spread/proliferate upon making contact. It's not that a live strain would "overwhelm" the immune system, it's more that acquired immunity comes on with such a delay that you risk infection taking hold.

If they find it they call in a nuanced, highly specific strike that "skips ahead" to immunoglobulin configurations that are optimized to clear the infection in a timely manner. To keep with the crappy metaphors, you're cutting out the entire middle process of your immune cells gathering "Intel" on the pathogen yet again.
That being said there's quite a lot of difference and debate over what makes a good vaccine, and from pathogen to pathogen there's not exactly a correct way to present the antigen to the immune system. Are killed strains better? Are attenuated live pathogens better? Which is in this vaccine I'm getting? Etc

Clostridium tetani is just a common soil bacteria, you encounter it on a daily basis on your skin and it's harmless unless it gets through your skin via a cut or abrasion. Sometimes if you have a patient where you don't know their vaccination history and they have an accident where tetanus might be a factor like a kid wrecked their bicycle and has a cut that requires stitches, you just give them one anyway just to be safe, since the harm from the shot is minimal unless they're allergic to it, and the harm from getting the disease is so catastrophic and possibly fatal.the benefit outweighs the risk by so much that it's never a bad idea to get the shot.
when I was a Corpsman, any time a Marine said they didn't know the last time they got a tetanus shot, and they so much as had a blister, they were getting a tetanus shot. If they even had to think about it longer than a few seconds, they were getting a tetanus shot. Doctors will sign off on that every time.
