Japanese doesn't have a 'th' sound, so they have to use 'su' to death is spelled desu. This also lead to Aeris/Aerith, Smith is spelled Sumisu, etc.

But say I'm Japanese. I'm reading this manga. How do I identify that 「です」 is supposed to really be a joke about death when it's part of their normal sentence structure? Is it written in katakana? Lets say I wasn't a lonely otaku and had never read a manga before. How would I know? How would I get the joke?
