True, however the Church did a good job at maintaining certain standards for a couple of centuries. After the authority of Church has been destroyed we were riding the ideological roller coaster changing our standards every couple of decades and crazy ideologues such as Marx started spawning everywhere.
So while the Church is not immune to degeneration it's still fairly more resistant than secular organisations and ideologies.
It doesn't matter anymore though since I don't think christianity can be salvaged at this point.

However the point here is that if you throw metaphysical fairy tales away the ideology becomes less powerful and people start asking too many questions.
