It didn't. gamergate was just the first time the liberal consensus got enough pushback for them to notice that a lot of the internet really didn't agree with them. It was a wake up call for the smug left-wingers who just assumed that the internet, the defining symbol of progress, would naturally always be pro-left wing ideas, and a watershed moment for those who opposed them who realised just how many people like them were out there. But there's no direct, causal connection between gamergate and Trump.
The alt-right isn't a thing, as such. It's just a word that used to be used to describe all the new groups on the internet that didn't follow the traditional conservative standards. For example, the groups that were against immigration but wanted pot legalised. The problem with attacking the 'alt-right' was that they weren't a single thing and they had no leadership.
Before November 2016 only a handful of people even vaguely knew who Richard Spencer was. Then the left-wing media saw his nazi salute hail trump video, and realised that if the alt-right didn't have a leader or common message, they could just say Richard Spencer was the leader and the alt-right were just nazis by another name, and no one would be able to categorically prove them wrong by showing an actual example of an alt-right leader.
