You can actually see the impact that the 2007/2008 moe explosion had on the art styles of a lot of studios/artists. You can also tell when a studio is running out of money. It's kind of interesting.

It's kind of funny since the earlier seasons of Pokemon were mired in cheap goofy 90s animeness. I didn't watch much of the later seasons, but it seems it tried to go for that cleaner look so common in modern cheap productions.
In any case pokemon anime is probably as crap as it was back in the days of old.
