Help me Sup Forums. user is starting to think the world's population may be incredibly overstated. Started thinking about China. In 1950 (after implementing the one child policy) the population was @500 million. Twenty years later in 1970, it's over 850 million. Assuming that half in 1950 were women; further assuming about half the women would be of child bearing age during that 20 years, you'd have about 125 million women to pad your population. And so, in order to achieve the stated growth, all 125 million would have to give birth to three children...and that's assuming no one dies in that time. How is this possible in a country with a one child policy so strictly enforced and zero immigration? Moreover, if a one child policy were adopted in any nation with no immigration (where the replacement numbers are ALWAYS 3.2 children per woman) the country's population would halve in about 70 years. Which means China's population should presently be about the same as ours.
Then user took a look at the population explosion in Nigeria. The numbers weren't making sense when trying to balance the life expectancy and birthrates. So user started looking at basic data. There is a reported population of nearly 200 million in Nigeria. Of these, over half live in urban areas. user then added the populations of every city in Nigeria, from Lagos down to towns of less than 15,000. user only came up with @45 million city dwellers -- leaving a shortfall of some 55 million. That's assuming that the census estimates are accurate. That means Nigeria's rural population would have to be in excess of 155 million in a country the size of Montana -- this simply is not possible.
I think we may be mislead about developing world population to make us feel vastly outnumbered; that we must yield to the crush of global democracy and ecumenical egalitarianism.
Just a hunch at this point, Sup Forums. But I think I may be onto something.

you are right about the one child policy being implemented in 1979 -- user carelessly assumed it was part of mao's great leap or what-have-you. Even so, this suspicion just occurred to me earlier today, and i'm still playing around with it. Long ago I concluded that (((they))) will and do lie about everything that cannot be verified independent of (((their))) data. Moreover, I see plenty of motive for padding the numbers. Population reduction isn't a novel concept for tptb; they've been at this for quite a while. It makes sense to me that they'd sow fear of some mass extinction event all while they slowly depopulated the earth gradually. In that the world's population is now overwhelmingly urban/suburban, it's easy to convince people that all spaces are being crowded like what most see surrounding them on a daily basis.
As for Nigeria and all of Africa, I agree with you (and they confess as much) that population figures are estimates. And so that begs the question, what motive is there to underestimate the population? I cannot think of a single one. Extending the principal, if Nigeria's population is overstated by a factor of two, what does that say about the rest of Africa? And for that matter greater Asia?

ethopia supposedly has a population of over 100 million. totaling all its cities and towns, i come up with less than 15 million urban population. and, again, it is said that over half ethopia's population live in urban areas.
something is amiss with these data sets.
another that really stands out is Chad. listed at over 14 million. all cities, down to a population of 1000, totaled together barely comes to 1.5 million. leaving 12.5 to live in a desert nation in the wilderness?
