The issue is that if you actually read Marx's work, Communism is like an end goal society where everything is perfectly equal and there is no economic disequilibrium. Thus, its true, 'Communism' has never been achieved according to the actual definitions. 'Communism' is much closer to a concept, it's something to work towards and base your policies around creating such an environment.
Socialism (which is what is normally refereed to as communism), is described by Marx to be a stepping stone to a communist society, this is a long term phase where long term economic and social policy is changed to a policy that is more in line with the communist ideal. This can take some time.
Thus the issue is lost in translation, people who read Marx's work spread the theoretical ideas of what they have read while the rest make assumptions on what they have learnt (normally from the media or education), normally for uneducated sources or people spreading their own agenda.
To summarise this, I don't think any communist will deny that Socialism has not been tried, but they will deny that communism (in its theoretical form) ever existed.

Best examples of this are normally things like state subsidised education and healthcare, two cornerstones of the modern western world are also cornerstones of Socialism and Communism. Australia also has things like minimum wage and a social security net, both are important in socialist policies.

Is said Leninism specifically. If I recall correctly, social democrats are critical of Leninism particularly it's authoritarianism. And Leninists, and other socialists don't consider social-democracy to be real socialism.

Their aim was just to grab land not to kick the Reds out, you also ignore the fact they pulled right out of Siberia when they realized it was going to be a hard fought war and staying in Russia for winter wasn't going to be very nice. They also left when the Reds regrouped and told them to fuck off out of the country.
Food starvation is a very overplayed meme. Famines were a semi regular occurrence and once Stalin industrialized the country Russia never had food problem. Also having a huge civil war and being invaded by Germans does tend to destroy and kill people and break factories and roads,and tools and supply lines.
Problem seems to be they make up the majority of socialists.

Like most things it all depends on your definition of Socialism and how you reach Communism.
Technically Lenin was doing the opposite to reach Anarchism by increasing state power, but that's how he was planning on reaching Communism by slowly handing over power and preparing society so eventually the workers and the State become one so the state simply withers away, but we still call Lenin a Communist since that was his goal.
But if you wanna go by a book definition no the USSR was not "true 100% Socialism" since the workers did not control all the the means of production It was a transitional period. However a lot of it's successes (As opposed to incorrect western propaganda) it did accomplish food for all, homes for all 0% unemployment and a ton of other things.
