I think a more effective point of argumentation is the idea that the state exists to serve the people. Universalist ideologies have to rely on tenuous links like social contract theory to connect people's interest with that of the state, and even then it doesn't hold up in that many circumstances. They allow outright treason, that's not excusable if your basis is the nation state. I think evolutionist ethics make a very, very strong case for nationalism, in addition to their views on nation formation.

But you've got to understand the USA is a special case, with its colonial history. It's not a nation, and also niggers. What's best for the USA doesn't necessarily apply to a European country that's a proper nation state, or nation state with an easily available legal excuse to kick out the foreign occupants.
