Graduated high school in '05. I look back on it with a lot of regret. I was super socially awkward and shy. Then I got to college and things worked out. But I wish I'd made more of my high school years.
Politically it was a weird time. I remember after 9/11 people pretended to be super patriotic and that phony bullshit made it into film and television for the next year and half. The religious right was ascendant and was punctuated by Janet Jackson at the Superbowl and Passion of the Christ was a big hit in theaters. The Iraq war really scrambled our countries foreign policy debate and thinking. Looking back, I'm not sure a lot of people really cared about Iraq since so few people knew anyone in the military and no one had higher taxes to pay.

Practically heaven on earth compared to the current sociopolitical environment. That crisis has left a dent that nothing has fixed. People are stagnant and relatively poor compared to the 90s. Meanwhile everything gets worse around them and encourages them to radicalize. Life is a hedonistic loop for most of the working class and I think most people have given up on grand aspirations for themselves or the human race, which is disappointing.
