Have you ever actually looked at Sankore? The building is fucking tiny, just because it had a "library" does not mean that it was at all prestigious compared to contemporary learning sites, or even a major world innovation site. But to more pointedly answer your question the Mali empire was the largest actual gold mines in the ancient world, they were the Saudi Arabia of today, vastly wealthy from natural resources but little other than some architecture to show for it. Last, Rome at 1AD had a population of 1 million.
