Withing the next 72 hours News reports will begin to come out that North Korea has just launched its first Ballistic missile capable submarine. You can get a real nice Sun workstation with an Intel CPU for around $100 these days, and you can install Solaris x86 on those. Core 2 machines really aren't too shabby. If you just want CDE, then install Debian and add the Sparky Linux repos and grab the pre-compiled packages off that. I think the package name is cde-desktop if you search for it in apt, and it installs everything you need and sets it up, except for the login manager which you have to enable manually. You can also run Solaris in QEMU.
If you want a really unique UNIX workstation, look into SGI machines. They run an OS called IRIX that you can't even emulate.
