I haven't touched japanese in months

Twice before I have learned kana and then just lost interest before vocabulary and grammar. I am not an avid animu watcher but I want to get back into it, as I feel like it will help me become more determined in my nip studies. Is 45 min - 1 hour a day enough to get back into nip studies without burning out?

I just came into this thread for the Op image, but I learnt all the common kanji by grinding on anki for months then just burnt out. Haven't touched stuff in months maybe even a year or so. Maybe one day I can get back into it when I have the time.

Hey /djt/, I can watch Precure without subs now (~85-95% comprehension). How long until I can watch the news? I'd say I'm at like 30-40% comprehension right now. I am trying to learn nip mostly through listening and immersion, seems to be working pretty well although it takes very long (I'm on year 2.5).

Anybody else learn nip like this?

It's the only way to learn when you've been learning that long.

I'm gonna apply for a year of student exchange via university. We'll see how things have changed after that.

I doubt anyone can really say how long. It's cool that just listening is working out for you. I'm not man enough to say fuck it and completely ditch vocab study because I feel like it lets me acquire vocab super quick and that's the main barrier to comprehension.

Is memrise an okay way to learn japanese? I'm not talking about the japan 1-3 course, I'm just talking about memrise in general.

It depends. Multiple choice is garbage. If you do it with typing it's okay but there's still no reason to use it over anki.

I always find these numbers funny. The tests aren't that hard, but most applicants are obviously highly overestimating their abilities. I wonder if Jap learners suffer extra hard from the Dunning-Kruger effect or whatever it is called

I don't think it's about overestimating. Most people just take the tests to "test themself"
Think about it, everyone knows N4 and such are worthless. You wouldn't take N4 if you knew you could easily pass it.

The tests cost money, I wouldn't take them if I wasn't sure I could pass. There are cheaper ways to simply test your own ability. I took the N2 to get "proof" that I knew some Japanese, which is important when applying for positions or such if I should ever want to do that.

Also, most people are willing to spend thousands on worthless classes. The JLPT is a drop in the bucket in comparison.

I've got a stupid degree and want to go abroad. I've basically only taken up learning after deciding to apply a while ago anyway, so it's not like I actually know the language.

Read the guide, do Genki and listen lots. Do what Steve Kaufmann does and listen to stuff with transcripts. After listening a few times, read through the transcript and mine any new words.

For anime, no, not at all.
In NHK news articles with videos, usually every word in the video also appears in the accompanying article, and sentences are often nearly identical. It's not direct subs but it makes it easy enough.

After making that post I flipped through some oneshot pages on MU and somewhat unsurprisingly pretty much every one I clicked on was translated. I can't think of one off the top of my head that I know is good and yet to be translated but I'm sure there's at least a few buried somewhere deep in my bookmarks.

Well, I mean, I'm always looking words up and shit. I study vocab, I just don't have a consistent list, kind of like how I learned English: just listening to my parents and asking what things meant.

I suppose, but that's the extent of it, and I only started because I was insanely bored due to English-language cultural output turning to complete shit and piss. I doubt Japanese is much better but I haven't really worked my way thru that much of the backlog.

Hey DJT. How do you deal with small-font computer text in Japanese? Is it typical for native speakers to blow the font up decently big or do you eventually just git gud at reading tiny-ass 漢字?
