Wasn't this anime about gay relationships?
no that is not even the best anime of its year user
no it had some /u/ scene
It was about fags and molerats.
>no that is not even the best anime of its year user
You're right, but your pic was surely unrelated.
SSY's journey from underrated to overrated has been interesting to observe.
/u/ is also gay
It was always overrated.
>masterpiece
hahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahah
Gay pride stuff
>masterpiece
>needs to steal from Dvorak to have a good ost
Not even top 20
...
Lemme tip that fedora for you. Also you gay piece of shit.
"the only" is a bit too much, and this board cannot call an anime like SSY a masterpiece because two guys are kissing in one scene, and that's a big no-no here. It's also debatable if it's truly a masterpeice because it has too many flaws for that
>stealing
next time any show or movie uses non-original music, it cannot be a masterpiece. hey let's tell people "2001" can't be one because Kubrick "stole" Also sprach Zarathustra, what a hack.
You are kind of stupid user
most overrated shit I have ever watched
interesting premise completely squandered
masterpieces of the 2010s

All the people who think this anime was pro-gay are literally retarded and didn't pay a lick of attention.
They brainwashed the kids into being gay during adolescence so they could reduce stress without having kids. They literally "grow" out of it in their society.
It was done to add to the dystopia of the setting not to titillate or be "pro-gay"
They didn't "brainwash" them into being pro -gay, they just removed any cultural stigmas for gay love
well it certainly has one of the best and emotionally impactful eds I've ever seen.
holy kek
If you're going to pick a single anime from this decade at least have the honesty to pick Keion S2. Nothing comes close.
No, they literally used bonobo sexual habits as a model for a genetic anxiety-valve which took the form of instant sublimation of emotional turmoil into sexual affection, regardless of the gender of the partner. This is a significant plot point in one of the very early episode.
well brainwash might've been the wrong term. But they genetically altered the mind state of humanity to seek stress relief through sexuality. The fact that all the kids are gay as fuck and all of the adult are in heterosexual monogamous relationships should clue you in to whats going on.
They don't directly spell it out but you're supposed to infer it.
What does the word "masterpiece" mean to you?
It's no K-On!!
That's not Re:Zero
they do directly spell it out in episode 4 when the false minoshiro basically explains 90% of how their society works.
this is important because all of these genetic and social constructs (IE. the pairing system in the academy which put the boys and girls in their teenage romantic relationships) are designed with one goal in mind: to prevent the catastrophic misuse of PK due to unregulated emotions.
I'm saying they don't spell out the gay teenage thing. They do however directly spell out the bonobos connection and genetic alteration.
This is true. It's just Japan's vaguely homophobic "adolescence" view point given sci-fi backing.
>They don't directly spell it out but you're supposed to infer it.
Or rather just didn't explain properly. The novels if I recall actually did explain it. Even mentioned gay blowjobs and Saki hinted at knowing how to please another girl.
What I mean is they didn't brainwash them into being specifically gay, more like "free love"
We don't really know if everyone "outgrows" it, we mostly only see the parents, which kinda can't be gay because then no kids possible, and MCs grown up, and only two survive IIRC.
K-On killed anime by proving lazy uncreative school settings with easy-to-write 1 dimensional gimmick characters sell better than putting actual effort and creativity into your show. In fact, KyoAni has built their entire career on killing creativity in the industry. The worst part is how much they get defended because "muh pretty colors," and "muh comfy"
Yes, this one anime killed the entire anime industry. Of course
I mean, the minoshiro explicitly states that the bonobo-model accounts for "immature and same-sex individuals" who regulate their anxiety by engaging in sexual relationships, and that this was the "society of love" that the scientists attempted to create.
Your delusional anti-Kyoani posts are the source of my mana.
What are you even talking about?
ahh I just looked this up and I'm actually wrong, death-feedback is the only thing that was genetically encoded. I think I thought the free-love aspect was genetically encoded because it's the only way the scene with Satoru and Saki in the tree in one of the early eps really makes sense; it's framed as though Saki has this sudden and out-of-character surge in her libido that she has to "fight against", and we hadn't seen any social conditioning of that prior to the scene, so a genetic trigger made the most sense I guess.
sorry.
No one can be this retarded.
SSY
Penguindrum
Tatami Galaxy
Rakugo
Mushishi 2
maybe Ping Pong
Yes.
And about racial diversity.
I keep hearing that but no one has actually tried to defend them yet so I've just been taking that as me winning.
This show had absolutely nothing to do with "gay relationships". The only reason they were even in the show was to serve as another reminder of how paranoia of misused PK shaped every aspect of their society.
So is OP's anime really good or pretentious shit? Seems to be based on a book.
Worth the time?
Worth, definitely
Likewise with the notion that the show had anything to do with "racial diversity"; the queerats existed solely to prevent an uprising of the non-PK slaves once those with PK were prevented from using it on humans.
There are no stigmas. I bet most of the adults have orgies both het and homo.
Yuasa killed anime by proving lazy uncreative "artsy" settings with easy-to-write 1 dimensional gimmick characters sell better than putting actual effort and creativity into your show. In fact, Yuasa has built his entire career on killing creativity in the industry. The worst part is how much he gets defended because "muh pretty colors," and "muh comfy"
I don't know that the "free-love" model really works as an analogue; it's not that every kind of relationship was allowed, but that the society was constructed so as to prevent any potentially dangerous repression of emotion and desire. Once people are post-pubescent I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be as large a need for sexual promiscuity, as evidenced by the existence of marriages in the society.
maybe there's also something to be said about Maria's arc in switching from Saki to Mamoru...
Aside from Katanagatari, I agree with this.
katanagatari is literally perfect tho
not the only masterpiece but it is indeed one, good taste OP
Wind Rises
Kaguya-hime
K-On! if we count series that began earlier
Ping Pong
Tatami Galaxy
Space Dandy
Midori-ko
Muybridge's Strings
Wonder
come on I get your point but that sentence doesn't make any sense. Artsy is synonomous with avant garde which is synonymous with creative
They have bonobo genes, bonobos fuck like there is no tomorrow. To them fucking other people does not necessarily mean that they don't love their wife or husband or that they are thinking of replacing them. Rather they are establishing a close relationship with their neighbor as well as getting off.

Why do people always forget source material? Adaptations aren't everything, for fuck's sake.
OP isn't talking about the source
Maria is probably heterosexual and so is Saki. Because there is no stigma and because they are close friends they choose to be each other partners. They can't fuck boys because there would probably be a lot of teen pregnancy. Mamoru is the one Maria loves and Shun is the one Saki loves.
How do you see Satoru?
Well actually the bonobo-model was just instituted as a social-conditioning program, not as a genetic modification (which I don't think makes much sense given how we see it working and the lack of obvious conditioning but w/e). Regardless though like I said the whole point of it is to prevent the violent expression of emotional instability: I think the point of the academy is to condition people to a point where they can autonomously function in society without external restraint through conditioning, and one of those conditions is the inculcation of sexual promiscuity during adolescence. Once they stabilize and gain a stable self-identity I don't think they would have occasion to need that outlet. I mean Saki does end the show by having a bunch of kids in an ostensibly monogamous relationship after all.
right, but it seems to me Maria never really considered herself as having affection for Mamoru until he needed to be...protected. Also I thought Maria explicitly stated in her letter that she loved Saki?
Then maybe he should, because the adaptations of these things barely add anything and often only take away. Ping Pong is the only one I can think of that's improved by its adaptation, but even that's marginal and the quality of the original is still 90% of why its good.
Reading Sup Forums you'd think something might as well not even exist if it's not adaptated for TV, since people always seem to assume all the good qualities of a show are introduced by the anime. Writing is especially bad for this, since it's often the thing that's changed the least in an adaptation. It pisses me off when people claim AotY as some mediocre adaptation of a pretty good manga from two decade ago or something.
But I suppose that's the lowest common denominator for you. Still just bottom feeding plebs despite feeling superior for feeding at the bottom of a different ocean than the one their peers feed at.
...
For a guy who thinks so highly of himself, you're pretty stupid.
Anime is the be all and end all. The only reason anyone makes manga or novels is in hope that one day it'll be adapted to anime. In a perfect world, all these stories would be available first in anime form but the making an anime is something one person can't do.
Satoru is bisexual or gay. Probably bi since he really did seem to love Shun and Saki is second place. He might be gay but has no problems with being with Saki because of their society but most likely bi. Shun was probably heterosexual and clearly loved Saki.
I always read it as in deep friendship love. Also Maria left her family and friends for Mamoru and Mamoru loved her so much he resisted finding his gay partner.
I might be remembering wrong but I thought they modified themselves genetically, so instead of being mostly related to chimpanzees who are violent we would be mostly related to bonobos. Kind of like the way they modified the non pk humans to look like rats so that there would be no problem with killing them and enslaving them
Replies aren't upvotes, retard.
I don't think highly of myself, I just think lowly of others. The difference is subtle but important.
I know this is a joke but I'm going to reply to it seriously anyway because I don't doubt there's someone lurking who thinks this is the case.
Anime is often basically just advertisement for the source or for some other adaptation, since the majority of anime is stigmatized as being either for otaku or children whereas say manga for example has a much wider appeal. Japan isn't the same as the west.
There are exceptions, but this is the case for most adaptations.
>I might be remembering wrong but I thought they modified themselves genetically, so instead of being mostly related to chimpanzees who are violent we would be mostly related to bonobos.
in ep 4 the false minoshiro talks about the bonobo model as the basis of the scientists' "society of love" but it doesn't bring up chimpanzees or genetic modification of anything other than the insertion of the death-feedback genes - do you know if it's brought up somewhere else?
>I always read it as in deep friendship love. Also Maria left her family and friends for Mamoru and Mamoru loved her so much he resisted finding his gay partner.
Well Mamoru was specifically characterized as a social anomaly for NOT ending up in a gay relationship during his adolescence, as though he was somehow unaffected by the social conditioning everyone else was subjected to. The real pathos of his relationship with Maria during that time lies in the fact that the legitimacy of Maria's relationship with Saki seemed to always be ambiguous - on the borderline between a product of social conditioning and an authentic and a volitional relationship between two lovers, whereas there was no doubt about the purity of Mamoru's love for Maria. Not only was it unrequited, but it was unrequited in an ambiguously personal way, as though Maria never even had a chance to address it as a possibility.
I guess I read the Maria/Saki relationship as more romantic, and I think maybe I also read the whole situation as destroying the homosexual/heterosexual distinction: Saki isn't "actually heterosexual", she just happens to have a more profound love for Shun that's tied to her childhood and everything that happened, and likewise Maria's sexual orientation fluctuated along with her position within society.
It was hated while it was airing. From the episodes with awful animation to the part where the characters went full homo, Sup Forums pretty much gave up on it. It was only after the very end that people started appreciating it.
but back to the original question of who Maria is "actually in love with": her letter seems to make it clear that she is in love with Saki but feels compelled to protect Mamoru, and I guess it's ambiguous whether that compulsion is just implicit love or a feeling of sisterly obligation. In the end there's no reason she can't have two different kinds of love for two different people.
The original reason I brought this up though was the implication that the kids "grow out" of their homosexual relationships into their "natural" heterosexual relationships: Maria into Mamoru and Saki into Shun. On the one hand it de-legitimizes the relationship between Maria and Saki; on the other, even after it's over, Maria and Saki seem to love each other and have no difficulty simultaneously loving someone of the opposite sex.
You new here m8?
>Regardless though like I said the whole point of it is to prevent the violent expression of emotional instability
Through unlimited sexual promiscuity? Top fucking kek. There is no surer way to make as many people as possible want to commit murder.
That's why it's not unlimited and why death-feedback was genetically encoded.
The psycho-sexual conditioning was not a simple increase in promiscuity; it's specifically the creation of direct psychological pathway which sublimates anxiety into romantic relationships.
the implication being that without that pathway, the more direct manifestation of that anxiety is a violent outburst of cantus.
OP is right.
Brb watching again.
Can't say it's the only one but it definitely is a masterpiece.
Well you could said that maybe they are all bisexual. But most likely they are probably 90% hetero and 10% gay or bisexual. If they were all gay they would probably feel resentment about being forced to choose an opposite sex partner to call your wife or husband and their society would not work.
Anyways I think you are a Saki/Maria fag and probably have blinders on as a result. Honestly I always thought Shun was Saki's number one and she dearly loved him and he loved her too since they were children. Also she clearly expresses jealousy when she saw Shun and Satoru make out. I do think Saki loves Maria and Maria loves her too but In a deep friendship kind of way. Ultimately Maria leaves her family and friends for Mamoru and I think she probably yearned to be with him because if she truly was romantically in love with Saki she would have turn Mamoru down because leading him on like that is cruel and that's not their nature. For example the part where Mamoru was drawing a picture of her, she was letting him draw her and she clearly knew he had feelings for her it was as if she was saying "don't worry your time will come" or something like that. But that's just my opinion.
Even thought I still watch it.
Hah, SSY is a masterpiece like Five Guys is gourmet dining.
yes but it has a gay scene in episode 8
>Anyways I think you are a Saki/Maria fag and probably have blinders on as a result.
haha I'm really not; I was really surprised at Maria's letter and Saki's reaction to it, given the way things had turned out for the two of them. I agree that Shun was absolutely Saki's "number one" from very early childhood, and that Saki only really came to love Maria over the course of her adolescence, and in the beginning of their relationship was maybe just kind of driven by hormones and conditioning. Like I said there's a driving ambiguity in their relationship regarding its emotional legitimacy.
Saki's reaction to Shun and Satoru is really complicated because the relationship was also symbolic of the social controls that are dictating their personal lives, something which Saki is painfully aware of throughout her childhood and adolescence, and was also part of the general receding of Shun from Saki's life. While jealousy was probably a part of it I think it was a lot more complicated than that as well.
It's interesting because the first person Satoru expressed sexual interest in was Saki, but grew to love Shun, and then finally ended up with Saki. I guess the show is kind of unambiguously saying that the homosexual relationships were mostly a product of social conditioning, but that such a causal origin had an ambiguous impact on their ultimate legitimacy for the participants.
At what exact moment did you drop OP's 'masterpiece'?
Time skip to adulthood.

I started having my serious doubts when the kids rescued the slave mole rats and made such a big deal out of it. Then my worst fears came to be shortly after when queerats where everywhere.
>stealing the music is okay if you steal the name too
do you know what the public domain is?
I've left it on episode 21 for a while.
I don't think you understand what stealing means user.
...
it does have the best soundtrack to closing credits tho, I'll give it that.
the moment I realized that rats are humans who've been genetically modified and basically everyone are fucking retards and this show cannot write a story and a good mystery which you cannot guess within 3 episodes for shit.
I guess the only intriguing moment for me was whether Mamoru and Maria were really tortured and killed by the rats and used their bones and their child or they just died.
Anyway, it's a shitty story about olive trees trying to beat humans, Saki is a stupid bitch for not letting Squealer just live in pain for eternity and Kiroumaru and Shun are the only good things about the show.
>olive trees trying to beat humans
what?
Don't bother. He's clearly retarded.
call me retarded, yet you can't even grasp the joke I slipped in there? You're way under my level, kid. Psshh
I'd be really interested in hearing what criteria you think establish this hierarchy of levels.
and anyway, there's already at least 1 show this year which beats SSY in writing, characters, story and themes, even if you want to be so anal and assume that liking Shit Sekai Yori makes you a gentleman with exquisite taste.
