They did fine and made their cash back (and a shitload more) off the dvd sales, sound/picture dramas, merch, sponsorships, and licensed games. The series being built off the popularity of Lelouch and a handful of secondary characters always guarenteed it could never become a massive franchise ala Gundam or Fate or Idolmaster.

Akito took a dive in sales from the first volume to the last and merch sales for it were also poor in comparison to the original series.

Them having such big delays between installments and the general quality of it both made it far less successful than it could have potentially been.

Compared to R2, nothing they did was that bad. Akito had a standard mecha series end plot. Gundam has a long history of introducing magical elements at the very end, especially Newtype shenanigans, and this was not much different. Just with Geass related stuff instead.

Only one episode of Akito evef relied on Lelouch in any significant way (number three) and that specific volume didn't get higher sales for it, so that's doubtful.

Lelouch is not confirmed dead and gone, and these announcements in particular make any conservative interpretations of previous declarations about the subject rather feeble.

GXS wasn't that popular, sadly, though they did release a pachinko machine for it not too long ago.

Your last point is correct, because obviously Code Geass was planned to be the story of Lelouch and little else, but it's far too early to say. They've barely begun to do anything important with the property yet, past the original show. After 2 or 3 anime projects we might be able to discuss this with more concrete evidence.
