Could be that he never told them at all, just like they never told Shigechi's parents about how he died, or Shinobu about what actually happened to Kosaku.

Probably Jotaro. Jonathan was at least something of an optimist and died thinking that his wife will survive and his enemy/brother will pass on with him, at the very least, he died with a smile on his face.
Jotaro though, he just had to live on past the tragic shit he experienced when he was young, he wasn't nearly as optimistic as Jonathan, he kept making mistakes, alienated his daughter, was dragged back into potentially world destroying events, and eventually ended up letting himself get killed in order to save his daughter, even though he likely knew that she was going to die anyway
johnny had a horrible life but a lot of it he brought on himself in the latter half. not to mention that through his adventure and friendship with gyro he makes peace with his tragedy and moves forward to a brighter future
