I remember when I first found out about NESTICLE, the NES emulator and roms around 1999. I was 15 at the time and started playing the classic games like the original Super Mario trilogy and others. Even for a 15 year old, to be transported back to like age 3-5 was an intense trip, emotions came flooding back from the sounds and images. I got obsessed with archiving the ROMs and saving it for the future.
When I got closer to 20 I did the same with SNES, Genesis games. Same process, same obsession.. but after playing a few I realized how hollow it was. You are reminded of a time in your life when you had fewer cares. Playing the games won't negate the adult concerns you now have complicating your life, which are significantly different from age 20 than age 15. I came to understand the fascination with 'retro gaming' as not a return to womb scenario so much as return to the safety of the living room or family room after school. When everything in life made sense and was taken care of by your parents. Playing that game after you finished homework was the only concern on your mind.
I still view youtubes and play emulators once every few years when I get nostalgic, but as far as buying consoles to replay classic games and spending active time on it as an adult I never went back to after around age 19-20. I supposed these guys are pushing 40 and, through a combination of alienation and intimidation from current youth culture and everything I described, have just fallen into this.
