I watched it when it aired and I wasn't browsing Sup Forums back then so I never made the distinction (in fact, you just informed me of there being a writer switch). If it wasn't for the ending, it would've been forgettable.

I know it's a controversial opinion to prefer the first season. I found TSR to be too serious, all the time. I liked that it was possible to have some relaxing episodes between the serious things in the first season. I also started to get a bit tired of Sousuke, it's only funny for so long. Fumoffu was also funny, but it had no plot, making it more shallow, and also suffered a bit from Sousuke's stupidity getting really repetitve. In the first season, that hadn't become a problem yet.
For Rayearth, I'd never consider it a mecha anime if it weren't for the second season. Which was the season that made the greatest impression on me, that I think back to when I think about Rayearth. Which is why I could include it as my favourite mecha anime.
