It's not just the exercise that helps (though it often does since looking better helps build confidence). The whole point is that to be able to get to the point of doing 50 'pressups' and run 10k takes training. This takes discipline, setting goals, and effort. Learning to put effort into fixing your problems instead of making excuses, setting goals to make that effort have a realizable end, and having the discipline to stick to reaching the goals even if faced with challenges or failures. These are the things that help you.

I was depressed for 4 years and for nearly 2 years i wanted to kill myself every day. GP recommended exercise and making new friends and hobbies. Every time I tried to start running or lifting I'd give up within a week or two because of depression.

Then I finally gave it my all with every single fiber of my being and continued doing it for about a month just running, and my mental state drastically improved. Want to start adult swimming lessons soon.

It's easily picking up something you would've once struggled with, or looking at your arms one day and realizing that useless flab has started to give way to all sorts of strange, unyielding shapes. Your body is God's gift to you. You just have to care for it to see how fascinating and resilient it actually is.
