Socialism is workers owning the means of production ie the stuff used in the workplace. Basically capitalism is a coercive system that forces you to sell your labor as a wage slave to those who own the MoP. You are not really free because you are subservient to them. Since the capitalists control production, they also control the state - not through a conspiracy but through class power. Money. We therefore need to take control of the state and create a state run by the workers, wherein the working people control the means of production for their own benefit. It may or may not be possible to therefore plan the economy around human needs rather than the profits that capitalists need for further capital accumulation. If markets are still needed, at least the production is democratically operated.
The ultimate goal is communism, a stateless and classless society, because once tech is advanced enough that scarcity is conquered completely and all things can be produced without the need for exchange, there is no need for markets, therefore no class conflict, therefore no need for a state to prop up one class against another (a state is really nothing in the end but a legalizing mechanism used by the ruling class to enforce its power) . Whether this is possible is up for debate. But socialism certainly is possible.

1st "No socialist governments have worked, broken ideology!" lets talk about the former "socialist" countries, I know this may seem like every socialist, but there has never been any socialist/communist countries. These countries are a mix of totalitarian dictatorship and state capitalism. When Lenin died he even said "We now have State Capitalism we know now make the transition to Socialism." Now how did all this State Capitalist Countries fail, well they didn't create a strong democratic government that was able to combat corruption instead they gave the leaders all the power.
2nd "Why do all these damn Commies want to distribute the wealth what the hell does dat mean?" Well it means that our economy will be mostly worker co-operatives and monopolies will no longer be around. Within these worker co-operatives workers will democratically run there business and will have high wages since the manager isn't getting all the money. These workers can also vote a manager every year or so to make business decisions either way higher wagers and will increase income equality.
3rd "Yeah but everyone in a commie government makes the same!" That's a fucking lie. In a real socialist society if a factory worker produces 10 toys and another only produces 5 and they're same quality that worker who produced 10 would get 2x more money. You earn money in business on quantity and quality of your work and not hourly wages.
4th "What's the point to work if everything is given to you in a commie society?" In a Socialist society the really only things that change from our currently USA, is that business are worker co-operatives, stock market isn't taken down, and more income equality. You still have to work for food,housing, clothing etc. In the end it would look like 70s with high wages and income equality.
