Angel's Egg

One of the most evocative, dark and sorrowed anime I've ever seen, each scene of this is like a painting masterfully crafted.

...

Explain why it shouldn't be so.

Pretentious shit. I can tell from your post, without even having watched it.

bump

I tried watching it but I had no idea what the fuck was going on so I just skipped around looking for any semblance of a plot or story.

I mean it's very artistic, yeah, but then again, so is the texture of my nut sack.

Pathetic behaviour, watch it before giving any infantile assumptions.

It has a metaphorical language you have to interpretate from the visuals, the story is very simple though.

>It has a metaphorical language you have to interpretate from the visuals, the story is very simple though.
That doesn't really tell me anything about it.
Is it just some convoluted pseudo-philosophical slideshow or does it actually go somewhere?
Just answer that and I'll be satisfied with a reason to watch it.

Like he said, the story is very simple, there aren't any twists and it's pretty straightforward. The real beauty is in the atmosphere it creates with the visuals, soundtrack and complex symbolism. I think that before you watch it you need to know that Angel's egg isn't necessarily about anything, and it's up to your own interpretation, but many choose to believe that the main theme is a representation the director's struggle with religion and blind faith.

It's not a pseudo-philosphical thing at all, it's just part of the narrative of the anime, there's a very little component of dialogues in it, most of it is a visual language. But if you seek a little element of plot, the anime tells about the existential desperation caused by the collapse of one's belief system, basically.

I don't really believe in the idea that is has depth or a true message, but it's enjoyable in the atmosphere and setting.

One of the few anime I actually like.

The movie is long and tenuous without much dialogue or action - exactly how the director wanted it. It was supposed to put the viewer in an odd state of mind, leading with atmosphere instead of words. There aren't direct answers or suspenseful conclusion - it's supposed to emulate the ambiguity of faith.

It's not pretentious. It's just standard Oshii style-over-substance type stuff (that's not me shitting on this, Oshii himself describes his work in this manner) with a hot topic theme thrown in there for good measure

I don't think there's a single anime with more substance than Angel's Egg.

>the anime tells about the existential desperation caused by the collapse of one's belief system

100% this.

The phylsophical stuff is actually pretty easy do grasp because the simple story puts it more in focus instead of hiding it int he subtext.
Just be warned that it's pretty slow, nothign much happens and you have a lot of time to think about what you see and let the art sink in.
That can eeither be boring or pretty chill, depanding on your mood

Loneliness and darkness required to enjoy this piece of art.

...

That silence scene before her scream when she realizes the egg is broken is fucking amazing, i see this movie every year or so but that scene always gets me

This. That scene is devastating, I saw this film in total silence during the night, and when the child screams it destroyed me, bringing all shivers down my spine.

>this was made in 1985

why did Oshii leave the industry ?
I have this theory that he actually exhausted every possibility and potential of anime

I'd rather feel a thing than understand it mang.

Film is a visual medium, style is substance

>That long drawn out scene where she's asleep and he's just staring at the egg and it's dead silent and the camera keeps slowly panning back but it doesn't fade to black and just keeps going
I remember thinking over and over "Don't do it you asshole," knowing that he would.

I've never felt so powerless watching a movie before.

He just gravitated more towards live action.

gf somehow convinced me to watch it, I fell asleep after 15 minutes.

smartypants pseudo-intellectual anime is the worst genre across all media.

You don't deserve your gf.

give me your gf

I hate to say it but he was getting worse. It seems that whenever he tries to exert too much control over a film it results in philosophy dumps and garbage.

how can you be the man behind Patlabor 2 and Gits and tell yourself sepia filter low budget movie with kurwa actors is where your talent it at its best

>the anime tells about the existential desperation caused by the collapse of one's belief system, basically.

Nice job swiping that off of Wikipedia.

Tenshi no Tamago is a way better title

Yeah, it's a fantastic film. Definitely my favourite of Oshii's, I like how it's less a genre film than the rest of his anime work. Got a very fresh feel to it, really not much else like it. More like European arthouse than anything Japanese. Wish he'd have stayed around longer to develop his style, I feel like he could've been one of the greats.

One of the things I like the most about Angel's Egg is that it pretty much has the perfect length for what it is. A usual short film wouldn't have been able to bring it all across, but it would have never been able to support a full movie.

I fell asleep before that scene and woke up scared as fuck. I really should rewatch it, it has a lot going on with religious imagery.

Fuck off normalfag, get out.

Does anyone know of any similar movies?

I found it very boring.

I mean that also depends on whether or not you count open-ended symbolism as substance. It only really has the substance the viewer is willing to give it with their interpretations. This is why art films in general never go over well with the general public who expect a story to tell them everything in a straightforward way and not expect them to think.

Nope.

Movie was trying to be too much at once.

but I think that was kind of the point
