If you go back to the actual event the 2016 renegotiation was a Merkel betrayal. She had signed up to help Cameron start getting "meaningful reform" of the EU but she backed down in the meeting room itself when the Eastern European countries and France started shouting down the idea of any reform to freedom of movement. If Merkel had stood strong then instead of staying silent, against her own promises - the UK would be in the EU now trying to get reform from the inside.

Having a trade deficit doesn't make Brits poorer, it makes Britain poorer.
The pound drop has made people poorer when it comes to buying imported products, so people are now buying less foreign cars and food. Only an ass would think that we would be able to completely close the trade deficit, our country is still, because of 40 years of EU cuckery - closely integrated into EU trading arrangements. They will be disentangled over the following decades as British suppliers stop buying cheap shite from overseas and reorientate themselves towards domestic purchasing.
