I dont think its bad, it measures popularity not actual quality, which may be corelated but arent the same.
Having a high position on MAL/AniDB just means that a lot of people watched and completed it and barely anybody gave it an actually bad rating.

You kids don't, but I still remember that many years ago AniDB top was a collection of all-time classics. Now it is somehow turned to pile of hyped and recently popular titles, just like every other rating chart.

Pretty much all of those shows have some standing significance in the anime community and industry. Perhaps not "classic" like GTO for example but certainly not flavor of the month stuff.
And honestly, I think a lot of "classics" are extremely overrated and mostly praised for their technical aspects. Nobody can tell me Wings of Honneamise is a good film.

That's what I'm talking about. Old top happened to be balanced against opinions like that. And, while I mostly think of Honneamise as of a demonstration of Gainax attitude, I know that many people — some not even anime lovers — consider it one of the greatest and totally can tell you why it's good.

It was the metaphoric anime version of the live action movie Right Stuff. It's an older movie, so most of the millenials automatically say it is not relevant. But then again, most of those millenials also do not have "the right stuff" type of upbringing that would cause them to respect that type of film content.
