How do you do tournament arcs right?

How do you do tournament arcs right?

By interrupting them.

This.

Interrupt them and have the intended last battle of the tournament as the climax of the resulting chaos.

Make them an absolute joke like in the original Dragon Ball except for the final fight

So, Naruto?

By not binging on shows, you neet. I enjoyed coming back from school to see the next YYH/DB episode lmao.

By making them insane.

why is polnareff fighting Jotaro?

Make it so it's not just 1vs1 matches. Tag team match, cavalry battle, race, put varieties in it.
Rivalries are fine but unexpected matchups are good too, even amongst the same side
Don't just focus on the MC's matches, his friends should take the spotlight when their matches come up.
Don't make the rival team disappears from the plot after the arc ends.

Tournament arcs are comfies at first (particularly when it's only beginning) but most people would agree they get dragged on, particularly when the actual plot kicks in and the tournament stops being the focus.

Kenichi did it right.

Tournament arcs is for introducing new people and showing people their abilities.

And also balancing characters out without killing them or going on a wild goose chase.

YYH had a great tournament arc

Is there even a tournament in manga that ended with nothing going completely chaotic, the heroes winning (or not) and going back home with a small break before the next arc?

First Dragon Ball tournaments, maybe? Excluding the one where Piccolo comes at the end and kill Krillin.

Pokemon usually does

Indeed. It's a shame the second one wasn't even close in greatness levels.

It'd be more accurate to say why is Raoh fighting random HnK character #143 since Sakigake Otokojuku is older than JJBA.

This is prototype Jotaro.

I wouldn't have minded if they just cut out Alita for all of Last Order and just had it star Sechs and Zazie

Dark Tournament

I think YYH is the posterboy for the perfect way to do tournament arcs, but that would also imply you are able to make your anime run as long as the Dark Tournament arc did and still say in budget.

what was so great about the Dark Tournament anyway? wasn't it pretty straight forward?

>fight some people
>1 day training arcs inbetween
>fight "final" boss with even bigger power up

or are you saying thats the charm?

By using it to develop side characters that have already been introduced rather than stroke the MCs dick or show how powerful villains are.

It was the perfect arc. Great character development, great pacing, great fights with lots of diversity, and practically perfect writing that allowed it, despite its overall linearity, to be immensely enjoyable. No tournament arc compares to it.

Hype, for one.
