Hell, it's so intense that Dave Mustaine, lead singer of Megadeth, has come out as huge Trump supporter and they're most recent album acting almost as his manifesto. So what gives?

I think metal is European, rather than "right-wing" specifically. The opposition recognizes this which is why SJWs have sought to attack it (because let's face it, the point of the extreme left is to destroy western culture specifically). Much like they are now attacking Warhammer 40.000. It seems they are more aware of the cultural significance of those things than the "fans" themselves.
I mean, take this incessant need to combine metal with "classical" music, even though most metal fans don't really know much of anything about classical and the two genres couldn't really be more different. Despite its age and remoteness, classical music is European music, and there's an underlying sense of affinity, a feeling of kinship, and a sense of respect for a tradition one may not entirely understand or appreciate, but which one feels to be an important element of one's own cultural heritage.
Metal itself is of course anything but traditional. The underlying principle of the music is anger and rebellion. But the strictly European stamp is there, and to the degree metal fans can display an appreciation for culture and tradition, it will always be European culture and tradition.

As for the conflation of classical and metal being European? Perhaps, metal is in many cases quite complex and melodic, like classical, so from a music perspective the 2 styles are not completely unalike.
