Why do millennials joke about and glorify being so bad with money?

Why do millennials joke about and glorify being so bad with money?

youtube.com/watch?v=dAH4zGd_W1s

It's always been a running joke that university students-even the smartest and most hardworking-are rarely well off unless mummy and daddy are bankrolling them.
Even working a job while at further education, oftentimes they're living with friends or away from home to gain life experience and will have bills.

The internet-and all the media that comes with it-is far more accessible now than it ever was.
Hence why memes are so popular and hence why popular culture and student culture (aka, teen to early 20s culture) is so prevelant in memes.

Simple stuff user.

>what is self-decrepitating humor

If you are unable to joke about your flaws, what the hell are you doing with your life?

Also this, the ability to sit back and have a laugh about how dire things are-provided that you're working to improve the situation where possible-is an endearing and great quality.

No, they are just incompetent fools who think making a joke out of it excuses their failure.

Because I am bad with my money. Why is it a problem if I want to make jokes about this fact?

You are either reading too much into it or projecting.

Literally the same as our no gf jokes

>younger adult sister refuses to get her first credit card because she thinks she won't be able to control her spending and will end up with massive debt
I'm glad she has the self-awareness to acknowledge that but I can't for the life of me understand how someone can be that irresponsible.

Why are you pretending to be a self sufficient rags to riches richfag? Young people struggle financially unless their parents, the state or a lucky break sorts them. Part of learning the value of money is having access to it and learning how to handle it.

Get over yourself faggot.

Coping mechanism. Literally nothing wrong with it.

Valid points, but this is also the same generation calling for economic overhaul while at the same time demanding pity parties due to their own financial ineptitude and wastefulness.
>I need to buy a $1,000 phone
>Fuck capitalism, socialism now

>Part of learning the value of money is having access to it and learning how to handle it
But they aren't though. They are making a virtue out of lacking self-discipline. It's no different to these 'how hungover am i' memes normies love.
It's all foolishness that leads nowhere.

>Sup Forums is a single person
>millenials are a single person

>Young people suddenly become politically aware and instantly fling themselves left or right

Again, this is normal. This is the first generation/generations to truly utilise the internet to bring the young voters in line with political policy and obviously it has weird affects. It's not necessarily good, but it's interesting.

>It's all foolishness that leads nowhere.
Also known as: existence.

Sorry but when my peers talked about getting their nails done every other week ($40-60), spending useless amounts of money on modifications for their truck or car, spending that money on drugs or alcohol, etc. I'm not going to buy the excuse that "it's really tough".

I mean, not going to lie, it sucks REALLY badly right now, but I constantly see my peers spending money on useless shit they don't need. Like coffee for instance, that's a big one.

>we are a single person lumped into only your version of reality
Unironically kys. Entry level jobs barely cover livable wage here and it seems nobody has given their kids an oppurtinity to be taught financial responsibility. 90% of time kids this generation leave home broke and have to learn the hard way.

>millennials spend more money recreationally than every other generation by a wide margin
>also pirate the shit out of everything from games to music to movies
>despite this they still blame their financial troubles on people other than themselves

I view it as a from of humble bragging: I partied so hard, etc.
There's also a Veblen aspect: I can afford to spend X.

So your "peers" aren't quite as well done by. This content is usually made by working class-ish people who have scraped their way into further education and have to balance their money.
They're also young and will spend it on things they like-to be honest likely how your "peers" do. The whole idea is that you learn how to live independently as a result of dicking yourself over through poor money management while studying, and once you finish studying you have a set of skills and qualifications that set you up for adult life.

>millenial shitting on millenials

op if you are under 32 years old congrats you are part of the millenial era enjoy your avocado
stop shooting yourself on the feet

if you are older than 32 get out of here grandpa

My generation always alienated me so I'm not loyal to any generation. What they want is the opposite of what I want so I'm not shooting myself in the foot. I just see most groups as transitory or things I was forced into by birth.

>how dire things are
Because they are shit with money.
Stop eating out.
Stop buying overpriced food.
Stop buying cosmetics and cigarettes.
