It wasn't until later that we were able to do physical experiments, analogous to sticking your hand in the water to see if your boat is moving. All the results suggested we aren't, and if the earth isn't moving, then it's at the centre of the universe and cosmology had been horribly wrong for a couple of centuries.
Einstein's job was to fix the problem, and he did so by basically breaking physics, not to mention literally injecting nihilism into cosmology itself, as others have pointed out.

Whenever a theory is proposed there are gaps; thats what pushes science forward. One good example is in the Geocentric model: lots of crazy math had to be created in order to account for the movement of planets. But with dark matter we really dont know. Either our current math is wrong, or it could be gravity coming from higher dimensions, or something else entirely that we havent considered.
